In 1839, Louis Jacques Mande
Daguerre pointed a black
box out a window and, to
the amazement of members of
the French Academy of Arts and
Sciences, took a picture of the
street below the first photo in
history. Photographers have long
since taken their cameras off the
window sill and, in their per
sistent pursuit of the unique,
have pointed them at anything
worth recording. At Lake Placid,
N.Y., for instance, the ski runs
were brought into focus after
dark while skiers carrying torches
sped down the slopes. Because
of the idiosyncrasies of film speed
vs. available light, the skiers
remained invisible but the camera
duly registered the peculiar
patterns of light flight s in
the night.
1 . Look now! It's last you'll see of skiers.
Once they start, only their torches will show.
2. Skiers, starting from opposite hillocks, cross
paths, then schuss out of sight at the right. .
3. Trailing in tandem, phantoms follow single
track toward slope, then disappear from view.
4. Joined by fifth "invisible man," group skis
in formation. Abrupt closing of shutter halts flight.
