Benny's Birthday Party
Presented in Loose But
Pleasinq Style on TV

Is Jack Benny. There will
now be a short pause while
everyone says, So What?"
The date was March 29,
1932. The place a Manhattan
radio show emceed by a fel
low named Ed Sullivan. The
occasion was the radio debut
of Benny, a 38-year-old comic
from Waukegan, 111.
For the above information
I am indebted to the histori
cal division of CBS-TV, the
network that helped Benny
celebrate his 40th birthday
Thursday night in loose, but
fairly pleasing style, on
"Shower of Stars."
If you're not up on your
Benny history, you may be
unaware that Jack marked
his 36th official birthday back
on a 1944 radio show. Work
ing under a time theory con
siderably more complicated
than Einstein's, Benny then
progressed in this fashion on
his shows:
1945 Birthday number 37.
1947 Birthday number 38.
1950 Birthday number 39.
At that point, time stopped.
Marks Milestone
At least it did until Thurs
day night when Benny and
a group of his friends cele
brated Benny's 40th birthday,
a milestone somewhat com
parable to the first four-minute
mile, although consider
ably slower in execution.
I guess I should mention
right here that birthdays
seem to be very big on TV
this month. Eddie Cantor ob
served his 68th on the NBC
TV Eddie Fisher Show last
week and Victor Moore ticks
off his 82nd on CBS-TV's Ed
Sullivan hour n Feb. 23. I
understand George Washing
ton is looking for a show on
the 22nd

die Anderson) who collapsed
during a rehearsal Wednes
day. Mary Livingstone was on
hand and so was Andy De
vine, Don Wilson, Paul Doug
las, Van Johnson, Jo Staf
ford, Mel Blanc and Sam
Hearn ("Mr. Schlepperman").
There were tenors past like
Frank Parker and Dennis
Day and bandleaders past like
Phil Harris, Don Bestor, Ted
Weems, Johnny Green and
Bob Crosby. Also Robert Sa
bonjian, the mayor of Wau
kegan. Crowded Like Subway
In fact, there were so
many guests around, it was
a little like holding a party
in the subway. The hour was
so crowded that most of the
guests didn't have much to
do. Neither did Benny which
is a bit of a shame because
Benny is a terribly funny
man. And, I might add, a
terribly young looking man
for 40.
By my calculations, Benny
should be ready to celebrate
his natal extravaganza around
1964. He'll be 41 then and
I hope TV tries to do a little
better by him. After all, he's
been doing right by the rest
of us for 64, uh, 40 years.
INVITATION ISSUED
Park Falls, Wis. (IP) Dan
Vicker, chairman of a home
coming celebration here, to
day invited the abominable
snowman of the Himalayas to
join the returning natives.
Vicker said the legendary
snowman "originated at Park
Falls but migrated in the early
days when we had a mild
winter." This winter, he said,
should prove attractively
"normal' 'to the abominable
expatriate.

Pickled Pork Roast
Thrifty, Satisfying
Satisfy that desire for good
pork flavor with an economi
cal pork shoulder roast. A
handsome pork loin is all very
well but you get the same
rich flavor and good nutri
tion in the new lean pork of
fresh pork shoulder butt. It
is roasted the same as loin
but requires more cooking
time. Here is recipe for pick
led pork; requires overnight
marinade.
5 pound pork shoulder butt
2 cups white vinegar '
2 tablespoons each, salt and
sugar
8 peppercorns
1 teaspoon celery seed
2 bay leaves
2 cloves garlic, halved
1 onion, sliced
10 cloves
Place pork in deep crock.
Mix vinegar, salt and sugar
and stir' in peppercorns, cel
ery seed, bay leaves, garlic,
onions and cloves; pour over
pork. Cover and refrigerate 24
hours turning several times.
Drain meat reserving marin
ade and place on rack in shal
low baking pan. Roast at 325
degrees 3 to 3Vz hours or
until meat thermometer reg
isters an internal temperature
of 15 degrees. Half an hour
before meat is cooked, remove
it from the oven, score fat
and stud with cloves. Pour
over the meat one-half cup of
the reserved marinade and
return to oven to finish cook
ing. Baste with more of the
marinade at 10 minute inter
vals during remainder of cook
ing. Hope for some to slice
cold. How about cornbread
with this?

ert night sky. A. time for tell
ing you that this Indio Date
Torte is made with sun-mel
lowed, smooth, non - sticky
fresh California dates; a su
perb production. ,
Dough. Rub one-half cup
butter or margarine and 1V4
cups sifted all-purpose flour
together until texture is "peb
bly". Add seven tablespoons
cream and stir to blend.
Smooth and pat dough evenly
over bottom of a greased bak
ing pan about 7VaxllV4 inch
es), bringing dough up sides
and ends about 1V4 inches.
Filling. Pit and chop or
grind two cups fresh Cali
fornia dates fine. Combine
dates, one cup granulated sug
are, two-thirds cup top milk,
dash of salt, one-quarter tea
spoon cinnamon and one beat
en egg and blend thoroughly.
Pour into dough-lined pan.
Bake in a hot oven, 400 de
grees, 30 to 35 minutes. Cool.
Cut into thin strips and serve
plain or cut into squares and
top with whipped cream or

Almond Cheese Roll
Sure Canape Success
This party canape roll com
bining American cheese and
unblanched almonds is easily
done, looks quite handsome
when offered on round butter
crackers. Three to four dozen
canapes depending on how
thinly you slice it. Plan ahead
to chill thoroughly.
Put one-fourth pound sharp
American cheese and one
half cup roasted unblanched
almonds through food chop
per using medium blade.
Blend with one-quarter cup
mayonnaise, a dash of Tabas
co sauce and one-quarter tea
spoon Worcestershire sauce,
shape into a roll about seven
inches long. Roll in paprika to
coat outside. Wrap in waxed
paper and chill thoroughly.
Cut into thin slices and ar
range on round butter crack
ers. Keep recipe handy for
admirers.
Toasted Almonds. If it is
western style flavor almonds
you want, don't blanch them.
To toast for this recipe and
lots of other good things, place
shelled nut kernels in a shal
low pan in a slow oven, 300
degrees, 20 to 30 minutes; stir
occasionally.

astounding answers. Candy is
a major food item; far outsells
soft drinks, ice cream, butter,
potatoes, cheese, cereal and
many other items for a total
of more than $1 bililon for
nearly three billion pounds of
candy. A per capita consump
tion of over 17 pounds.
Candy is mightly important
to us because our west coast
states produce, a larger num
ber of different products used
in the manufacture of confec
tions than any other area
Seventy million pounds of our
almonds, 14 million pounds of
walnuts, millions of pounds of
sugar from sugar beets. Then
there are raisins, dates, cher
ries, peanuts, corn and dairy
products going into candy
Our citrus fruits including
oranges, lemons and limes
constitute an important source
of pectin as well as being
much enjoyed for these popu
lar fruit flavors.
Meat Situation
This remains about the same
with economy cuts of pork,
both smoked and fresh, the
best buys. Bacon and fresh
loin prices are down a bit.
Lamb breast, patties and cuts
for stewing are bargains. Beef
chucks, ribs and ground beef
make good eating at small
cost. All poultry continues
abundant. Eggs are down a

New York's handling of vio
lence in the schools.

In the latest outbreak of
youthful lawlessness two
Negro youths estimated to be
16 and 19 years old invaded
the Macombs Junior High
school in the Bronx.
Round Up Monitors
Brandishing a long knife
and club, they rounded up
seven-fourth floor corridor
monitors, aged 12 to 14, and
a 13-year-old girl. From the
boys the robbers took a total
of about $6 and four wrist
watches. They did not rob or
otherwise molest the girl. All
the victims were white. .

Detectives meanwhile ques
tioned relatives and neighbors
of a pretty, black-haired high
school student, Lillian Mo
jica, 16, whose beaten and
partly burned body was
found in the cellar of her
Manhattan home. The girl,
New York-born daughter of
Puerto Rican parents, had a
hole in the top of her head,
apparently from a severe
blow. The upper part of her
body was charred and her
clothes were burned off.
