newly put to America's physi
cians is: could it be that more
children are now immunized
against polio with the Salk
vaccine, than are immunized
against smallpox, diphtheria
tetanus and whooping cough?
The question was put by
Dr. Robert A. G e r r l c k
through the American Acad
emy of General Practice. He
recalled two features of epi
demics of smallpox and diph
theria quarantines on the
homes and the "dead wagon"
at midnight.
Then he gave the results
of a survey of the children
of Fulton county, Ohio. Al
most two-thirds had had the
Salk vaccine 34.2 per cent
hadn't. But 36.9 per cent
hadn't had the combined vac
cine which immunizes against
diphtheria, tetanus and
whooping cough and in some
10 pec cent more the "boost
er" shot was overdue. Even
more startling, from the
viewpoint of rural Fulton
county which has a popula
tion of 30,000 with 17 schools
and 19 physicians, were the
results as regards smallpox.
All is Not Well
More than half had had no
vaccination, less than one
third were fully protected,
and the remainder were over
due for a repeat vaccination.
This, said Garrick who prac
tices in the county "dramat
ically emphasizes that all is
not well in the field of pre
ventive medicine."
Diphtheria once was the
great strangler of children,
and smallpox was a great
killer of adults and children
alike. Immunizations were
developed, they were applied
on a mass scale and deter
minedly over several genera
tions, and the diseases have
all but disappeared.
Indeed, said Gerrick, there
are physicians who have not
seen "a single case of small
pox, diphtheria, or tetanus."
Which is a good thing, of
course, "bHt in another way.
it is a rather sad state of af
fairs since too many physi
cians and parents have be
come complacent in this day
of 'wonder drugs.' "
The Reasons
He thought a number of
things accounted for there be
ing many unprotected per
sons around persons unpro
tected against preventable
diseases whose power to kill
is enormous but is largely un
known to present Americans.
"But the most important
reason, he said, was "lack of
public education. Certainly,
in any community, there will
be those who 'don't believe in
shots,' or who feel they can
not afford proper medical
care, but these are certainly
a small minority.
"It seems that most of the
unprotected" are from rea
sonably intelligent families
who just do not understand
the value of immunizations,
or who have forgotten to
keep their immunizations up
to date." So, let physicians
get to work educating these
people, he said; no one can
explain "the advantage, in
fact the necessity, of receiv
ing immunizations and keep
ing them' up to date," better
than they.
