over something, or her hus
band was drinking. Actually,
if she knew even a little
about genetics, she would
have known that these condi
tions could hardly have had
any influence on her child.
When a woman i s in ' her
childhood, her ovaries already
contain the ova (little eggs)
that she is going to use in
years to come. Similarly, the
man is forming spermotozoa
for some time before he is
likely to use them. Hence it
is that the mental or physical
condition of the mother or
father at the time of concep
tion cannot influence the in
telligence or health of the
child that is to come.
Mothers are wrong, also,
when they think that they
have "marked" the child born
with a red birth-mark or a
hare-lip. Experts tell me that
when the mother thought
some fright had marked the
child, he was already so fully
formed that it was too late
to put such a defect on him.
The defect was fully develop
ed very early in the develop
ment of the infant.
Albumin In the Urine
Many persons are much
frightened when told that
there is some albumin in their
urine, immediately, they
think they have Bright's dis
ease, and that their days are
numbered. Actually, there
are several fairly harmless
conditions that can produce a
trace of albumin in the urine.
There are some people who
have a little albumin in the
urine only when they are on
their feet; it disappears when
they are lying down. This
does not do any harm. Other
persons have a little leakage
of albumin into the urine, in
spite of the fact that, by all
tests, there is plenty of good
kidney tissue to keep the per
son healthy all his days. Many
a time, at the Mayo Clinic, I
found a little albumin in the
urine of a person who had
just come in very tired from
a long journey. Later, when
he was rested, he had no
albumin. Many persons with
a high blood pressure or a
diabetes will usually have a
little albumin in the urine.
There are some children
who have enormous quantities
of albumin in the urine with
what is called nephrosis. It is
a disease we don't know much
about, but today many of the
invalids are being helped with
cortisone and other drugs. Of
ten these children become so
water-logged that they swell
up all over and even their
face may be swollen.
In many cases, a person's
kidneys were injured when he
was a child, perhaps when he
had an acute tonsillitis, or
streptococcic sore throat. He
many then continue to have
albumin in his urine for the
rest of his days, but still his
life may not be shortened.
The wise physician, when
he finds some albumin in the
urine, tries to find, if possible,
if there is serious damage to
the kidneys. He can get a
certain test made which will
give him a pretty good idea
of the amount of kidney tis
sue which has been destroyed.

trouble in middle life be
cause of an infection., of the
kidneys with bacteria; or
stones may form in a kidney,
and destroy its function. The
important thing, when a man
finds himself with albumin in
his urine, is to get examined
bv a Dhvsician able enough to
say what the disease probably
is, and also to say if there is
any seriousness to it.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag
nose by mail.

Residents Warned
About Phone Sales
Don McNeil, manager of
the Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce, has cautioned
residents of southern' Oregon
to beware of high-pressure
telephone salesmen offering
securities.
Citing a warning issued by
the National Better Business
bureau, with which the Cham
ber is affiliated, McNeil said
that many inexperienced in
vestors are receiving high-
pressure telephone calls from
self-styled brokerage firms in
New York and Canada. The
salesman, he said, urge the
purchase of shares in obscure
or highly speculative compa
nies.
Because of the increased
"boiler room" activity, Mc
Neil said the U. S. Securities
and Exchange commission has
warned investors to protect
themselves by not dealing
with strange securities firms,
beware of promises of spec
tacular profits, and give at
least as much consideration
to buying securities as you
would purchase any valuable
property.
