Prince Rainier No Longer Calls Old
Friends; Now Content With Princess

drink," the plaintive voice

night?" But Prince Rainier doesn't

the two and he delights in it.

ple would like to see more of
Grace but she has been an
expectant mother most of her
entire time in Monaco so far

of a human guinea pig at the
National Institute of Health
to aid scientific research.
Jerry Duerksen, 20, Moun
tain Lake, Minn., who chose
to serve science rather than
compromise his religious scru
ples against military service,
lives in a special sealed cham
ber for several days at a time.
During the experimental per
iods, scientists record his
every move, and measure the
amount of food he eats, the
water he drinks and the
amount of air he breathes.
The metabolic chamber is
designed to determine how
humans use food, air and wa
ter in the process of living.
The results of the tests are
expected to aid in discovering
the secrets of arthritis and
other metabolic diseases.
In the chamber, Duerksen
resembles a space cadet for
he wears a helmet which con
tains a two-way radio through
which, he communicates with
the doctors and through which
they issue orders. A tread
mill inside the chamber pro
vides the young Minnesotan
with exercise during the con
finement periods.
A Healthy Touch
Grace has added a healthy
touch of informality to pal
ace life. She and the prince
j now turn up at the Hotel de
Paris for1 dinner and a dance
' he never used to come when
he was a bachelor. In a re
I cent London visit, they went
I to small restaurants.
The prince always wanted
to go to informal places. With
Grace he can.
Another factor in their hap
piness is the fact that things
are booming in his tiny 372
acre country. The gambling
casino is once again the capi
tal of European games of
chance and a fury of building
and alteration is going on.
Old villas are coming down
and apartment houses -are
going up. Older dwellings are
adding new floors in what
some are calling a vertical ex
pansion since there is very
little room for horizontal
growth.
Some old residents are not
happy about the disappear
ance of green places and the
i change in character of the
principality. But criticism is
apt to be muted. As one
wealthy resident said, "The
fellow on the hill could cancel
my resident permit in a min
ute if he wanted to." The mere
threat of being sent back to
taxation is enough to turn
foreigners pale.
The Picture
That's the picture as this
well-adjusted couple complete
the second year of marriage.
Grace and Rainier liked
each other when a French
magazine first introduced
them - for a publicity photo
graph. Then Father Tucker
prodded destiny into action
and so love was born.
Of his part in the storybook '
romance, the Wilmington, i
Del., priest remarks somewhat
cryptically:
"Perfect matches are made
in heaven safety matches
are made by man."
As I left he gave me a cigar
from a box he is apparently
hoarding for the birth of
Princess Grace's second baby.
On the cellophane wrapper
were the hopeful words: ,
"It's a boy."

Library Offers Students Advantage

brary rather than attempt to
study at home in a surround
ing of television, radio, young
er children and other factors
which may disturb concentra
tion. This is the view of Virgil
Catlin, the administrative as
sistant of Proviso Township
High School of Maywood, a
suburb of Chicago. '
Catlin conducted a survey
of many high schools and
found that the institutions
are becoming1,more and more
library conscious. The schools
are making every effort to
bring together the teacher,
top pupils and the librarian.
In several instances a spe
cial book list is set aside for
the more talented students.
More advanced books are or
dered every two weeks and
honor students encourage the
more advanced students to
take an active part in building
up the library to assist the
less gifted classmates.
