FATHER MEETS DAUGHTER If s a happy moment for

daughter, Carmen Rosita Mueller, after her arrival in
New York from Stuttgart, Germany. The 20-year-old Ft
Carson, Colo., serviceman plans to adopt the 3V&-year-old
girl when he reaches 21 next August Carmen's mother,
Maria, remained at Ft. Carson while Neal came
to New York to pick up the child. Neal said he was
unable to obtain a visa for Carmen at the time he and
his German wife left for the U. S.

school here whose mission is
to increase flying safety.
Air traffic cops from almost
everywhere come to the Civil
Aero nautics Administration
Aeronautical center, located
at Will Rogers municipal air
port. The operation,, only one
of its kind, is the center of
airways, air traffic control,
and air safety training for per
sonnel charged with those du
ties the world over.
Through the center's class
rooms pass personnel connect
ed with the CAA, the mili
tary, and those in charge of
the air control machinery of
all free nations. In addition to
the hundreds who receive
training at the center each
year, 3,500 other CAA em
ployees scattered around the
world are taking correspond
ence courses.
During 1958, Uncle Sam
will train 4,500 air control
specialists at the fast-expand-ln
center in a drive to get
ready for the era of jet. trans-1
porta tion. The group memoes
120 foreign students and 60
U. S. Air Force men. The cen
ter now is handling about 500
students at a time, but It is be
ing expanded as rapidly as
possible. It now has 1,140 em
ployees and plans to add more
New Buildings

center, said $12,600,000 is be
ing spent at the layout during
the current fiscal year. Seven
new buildings are in various
phases of construction or com
pletion under a $13 million ex
pansion program financed by
urivate investors, ine govern
ment Is taking long-term
leases on the structures to re
tire the private indebtedness
behind them
The aeronautical center was
established in 1946 when the
air base at Will Rogers field
was deactivated. In forming
the center, the standardization
center was moved here from
Houston, Tex., the signal
training center and federal
airways equipment warehous
ing from Forth Worth, Tex.,
the communications opera
tions school from Seattle,
Wash., and the international
training school from Kansas
City.
While the center is usually
thought of as a facility for
training personnel to- keep in
step with new procedures and
technical advancements, it al
so has an unusual warehous
ing and supply function.
24-Hour Service
The CAA, charged with
maintaining air travel safety
throughout the United States
and its territories, has estab
lished its continental supply
depot here, as well as main
tenance and installation shops
for avionics equipment de
vices which are electronic and
airborne. One warehouse with
650,000 square feet of storage

space is being completed at
the center.
This phase of the operation
includes storing, assembling
and distributing all technical
equipment and supplies need
ed to install and operate flight
aids. To make up parcels of
navigational aids, a number of
engineers and technicians are
employed, far more than
warehouse clerks.
The center also is respon
sible for parts, accessories and
technical equipment for all
aircraft owned and operated
by the CAA.
"We can give 24-hour serv
ice to any point in the United
States and not over 48-hour
service to any point in the
world where CAA or its coop
erating system operates," Lan
ter said.
The center now is develop
ing flying laboratories to test
electronic safety equipment
installed on civil airways
throughout the world. Jet as
well as piston-engine aircraft
of all types will be used for
this testing;- Lanter said.
Children Learn
Bible From Puppets
Wichita, Kans. (IP) Bible
stories come to life for small
fry members of a church.
The credit goes to Mrs.
Thomas Parish, wife of the
minister of Wichita Central
Christian church, who uses
puppets to make the Bible
meaningful for children.
Mrs. Parish, mother of four
children, an artist and author
from Independence, Mo., has
designed 15 Biblical charac
ters from balsa wood, plus a
few animals for laughs, to put
over stories from the Old and
New Testaments.
She directs performances,
but the children assemble the
puppets, make their clothes,
write the scripts and pull the
strings.
"The production is simpli
fied by pre-recording the chil
dren's voices on tape. That
eliminates the need for each
child to memorize parts. When
the actual show is on, the
youngsters move their puppets
to correspond with the re
corded words," Mrs. Parish
explained.
She got the idea 10 years
ago when she noted how in
terested children were when
they listened to safety rules
illustrated with puppets. She
tried the technique on chil
dren at church, and attend
ance increased.
STILL MAKING RATTAN
Gardner, Mass. (IP) A
firm here still manufactures
the old-fashioned rattan, with
which teachers laced unruly
pupils back in the 19th cen
tury. The Commonwealth
Manufacturing Co. has a
standing order for 100 of the
yard-long rattans to be sent to
an out-of-state school supply
house each year.
