Racehorses on Relief
Stirs Deleware Senator
Washington (IP) Sen. John

owners of the racehorse
Swaps were "apparently down
to their last million dollars"
Greyhound Hearing
Slated in Court
Portland (W Federal
Judge William East scheduled
a hearing at 4 p.m. today at
which Greyhound bus lines
will seek a temporary in
junction to get some 200 bus
drivers back on the job.
Greyhound service between
Portland and Redding and
Eureka, Calif., has been cut
off since early this week
after drivers reported "sick."
They were reported to be dis
satisfied over the company's
policy in firing drivers.
- Judge East Wednesday de
rued a temporary restraining
order. The Motor Coach Em
ployees Union said it did not
authorize a walkout. The com
pany claims it has a no-strike
agreement in a contract which
runs until Feb. 28. Greyhound
said it believed the union did
not call or authorize the walk
out but said in its complaint
that it either "permitted, in:
spired, directed or condoned"
when they asked for drought
relief.
Williams began a Senate at
tack on "racehorses on relief
programs" last Monday. He
reported then that Rex and
Reed Ellsworth, Arizona
ranchers who owned the 1955
Kentucky Derby winner got
some $28,000 worth of emer
gency drought feed.
Wednesday the Deleware
Republican put into the Con
gressional Record the owners'
statement on an Agriculture
Department application blank
that "without assistance" they
could not maintain their
"basic foundation livestock
herd.""
He said the case was anoth
er example of "abuses" in a
"well intentioned program."
In one previous case, he said,
the only animals owned by
the borrower were a "polo
pony and a bird dog.
Williams noted that the
Ellsworths sold Swaps last
year for $1 million after the
horse had earned them $848,
000. "They were so desperate,"
he said, "they had to go on
relief roles." ,
Williams said he is glad to
note that the Agriculture De
partment and the Justice De
partment are looking into the
case and may try to recover
the money.
SWAPS FREE-LOADING? Swaps, one of the nation's rictt
est race horses, has been getting free oats and hay from thk
government, it was charged by Sen. John J. Williams (R-Del
Williams told the Senate that Rex Ellsworth and his brother,
Arizona ranchers and owners of Swaps, were approved to
receive more than two million pounds of subsidized feed
under the drought relief program.
