be done about Mary's teeth.
They do stick out a little
but it hardly seems worth
while to make a fuss about
It now when she is so
young. What do you think?
There Is little good reason
for the severely "crooked
teeth," which dentists call
malocclusion, found in thous
ands young people today.
Malocclusion is often accom
panied by deforming and dis
abling conditions.
The girl who won't smile,
the boy who becomes ex
tremely self-conscious about
his appearance, the young-
ater who is taunted for his
"buck teeth" are familiar
enough.
The tragedy of the young
person whose appearance is
marred by his teeth is so
often needless because much
of the trouble could have
been prevented.
Crucial Period
The time Mary's perman
ent teeth begin to appear is
the crucial period for detect
ing the beginnings of teeth
that are out of line. Routine
examinations by the dentist
make it possible to detect and
correct these conditions be
fore they become serious.
The most important stage
anpears to tfe between the
ages of six and 12 years when
most of the permanent teeth
erupt and the first teeth are
lost. The dental profession
' calls it the "period of mixed
dentition."
Loss of the child's first
molars before the permanent
teeth are In may be respon
sible for the development of
; "crooked teeth" by causing
I '
adjacent teeth to drift toward
the open space. This can set
up a kind of chain reaction
throughout the dental arch.
When a tooth, particularly a
back tooth, is lost too soon,
it is usually advisable to in
sert a device to maintain the
space.
Habits of Childhood
Some habits of childhood,
if continued beyond the age
of five or six, may also be
disastrous to the development
of good tooth alignment. The
child between the ages of
about six and eight who sucks
his thumb or who has fallen
into the habit of thrusting
his tongue against his teeth
as he watches television or I
reads may push his newly de
veloping front teeth forward.
Parents are cautioned not
to confuse the so-called six-
year molars with the "baby"
teeth.. These molars are per
manent teeth and usually ap
pear when children are about
six years old. There are four
of them, and they can be lo-j
cated by counting back six
teeth rom the front of the
mouth. They serve as anchors
in keeping the entire dental
arch in position.
Prevention of i r r e g ular
teeth is more than a beauty
treatment or psychological
treatment. If neglected, the
condition may interfere with
nutrition. It may cause facial
deformities. It may contribute
to speech defects. It may
cause diseases of the gums
later in life.

CLAIM 24S DEAD
"Army of Liberation of the
Moroccan Sahara" claimed to
day that 246 Spanish soldiers
were killed in fighting last
week around the Ifni enclave
in West Africa. A communique
said the Spaniards were kill
ed Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 when
Spanish forces tried to battle
their way through the encir
clement of the enclave by
Army of Liberation irregu
lars. Five liberation soldiers
were wounded, the commun
que said.

NINE KILLED IN MAINE
Augusta, Me. (IP) The
1957 Maine deer hunting sea
son claimed nine lives, four
more than the 1956 season.
Three of this year's victims
died due to careless gun
handling. One victim was mis
taken for a bear, another for
a deer. Three more died from
wounds inflicted from, shots
by hunting companions, while
a stray bullet resulted in the
death of one. Five teen-agers
were among the nine victims.
