Business Problems Set

note next month for an Ore
gon small business conference
at Oregon State college.
The three-day conference,
scheduled March 13 to 15. was
organized to help small busi
nessmen of the state learn
how to use research and de
velopment to solve many of
their business problems.
The conference is a follow
up to a national conference
called in September by Presi
dent Eisenhower. State con
ferences were recommended
by the national leaders and
the Corvallis Conference on
Research and Development
for Oregon Small Business is
the first announced by any
state.
First-Day Sessions
First-day meetings will be
built around how research can
help small business, import
ance of research in the Ameri
can economy, and how small
business can get started on a
small-scale in research and de
velopment programs. "Nego
tiated Government Research
Contracts" will be topic for
the dinner address.
The second-day sessions
will include discussions on re
search agencies available to
small business. These include
commercial organizations, re
search institutes, educational
institutions and state and fed
eral agencies. Sources of re
search and development infor
mation will draw emphasis in
the afternoon.
Question - and - answer per
iods on various phases of re
search and development are
scheduled the final morning
of the conference. Business
men will be given opportun
ity to discuss their individual
problems and programs with
conference speakers and vis
iting authorities.

They called him one of the
most dangerous examples of
the "marriage swindler," who
preys on West Berlin's 490,
000 lonely women.
Police found him at his
work in the home of a pros
perous widow who owns a
West Berlin inn.
Gives Money To Swindler
The widow already had giv
en Mueller 2,000 marks ($500)
to finance their planned
"marriage," police said.
Mueller was accused of col
lecting sums of up to 2,500
marks (625) from numerous
other marriage-seeking wom
en. Because of the shortage of
marriageable men, "marriage
swindling" has become a well
paid profession here.
Looks, fine clothes, groom
ing, nfoney, a good job are
not needed.
In this city of lonely women
all you need for the job is
lack of character, some ruth
lessness and the ability to
promise marriage to girls who
want a husband.
Women Want Husbands
There are very many wom
en who do want a husband.
Most of them have no chance
of .getting one.
Of West Berlin's popula
tion of 2.200.000
300,000. This gives a surplus
of 400,000 women.
But that figure tells only

Rehearsals Start
For Annual Kapers
Rehearsals are now under
way for the annual Medford
Kiwanis Kapers, a program
of songs, gags, skits and danc
ing scheduled for Feb. 26, '27
and 28 and March 1 at the
Medford High school auditor
ium. Professional director is Bob
D'Arcy of Lassen Productions,
Hollywood, Calif. He outlined
features of the show to Ki-
wanians yesterday at. their I however,
luncheon meeting at Rogue
Valley Country club.
"Krazy Kapers of 1958"
will have a magazine review
theme. Scenes in the first act
will depict certain magazines
or features of magazine pub
lication. Second act will con
cern a television magazine
and will be a telecast review
with the Kiwanis chorus par
ticipating. The production will have
all local talent. Proceeds will
go largely toward financing
a dental clinic which is sched
uled to open MarcH 1 in the
county courthouse.
Tickets are available from
any Kiwanian. Special chil
dren's prices will prevail on
Wednesday night of the show
and all seats will be general
admission. Reserved seats will
be available for the Thurs
day, Friday and Saturday per
formances when there' will be

of lonely people and provide
a fertile field for adventurers.
The marriage swind-ler
meets a lonely woman through
an advertisement or an agen
cy, quickly proposes marriage
and sets a date for the wed
ding. Shortly before the wedding,
he borrows money
to meet a financial obligation
or to make a 'down payment
on a home or 'to meet some
wedding expense.
With the money in his pock
et he is off to answer another
advertisement and repeat the
process. ,
Library To Compete
With Din of Traffic
Leominster, Mass. (IP) The
din of traffic in the business
district will have to compete
against classical music.
The Public Library plans
an experimental program of
broadcasting such music
through loudspeakers . outside
the building.
The records to Je played
will be selected from the li
brary's collection. Library
trustees said they hoped the
broadcasts would stimulate
increased borrowing of the
records.
Museum Visited by
1 203 in January
Jacksonville A total of
1,203 persons visited the Jack
sonville museum during Janu
ary, Miss Mary Hanley cura
tor, has Announced. The total
compares with 1,139 in Janu
ary last year,, and brings the
total since the museum
opened July 10, 1950, to 274,
206. Visitors came from 24
states, the territories of
Alaska and Hawaii, and from
Australia, Holland, Canada
and Thailand. There were
seven groups of Boy Scouts,
Girl Scouts, Bluebirds and
Cub Scouts.
Gifts and loans included a
section of the oldest Cornice
pear tree in the valley, furn
ished by C. C. Cordy, county
horticultural agent. The tree
furnished budwood for all the
old Cornice pear orchards
here.
Other gifts and loans in
cluded a World War I ma
chine gun, Indian jewelry and
artifacts, old newspapers, and
several other items.

Membership Drive Planned by Group
Rogue River Plans for a
membership drive have been
made by Rogue TV, Inc., a
non-profit organization plan
ning installation of translaters
for introduction of television
signals from distant stations.
The organization held a meet
ing early this week at Rogue
River Hardware.
Bill Cody, president, said
memberships of from S20 up
ward will be solicited to raise
funds for installation of trans
lator equipment. He said that
authorization for rebroadcast
of television signals had been
obtained from "several" sta
tions. Cody said group represen
tatives would be available to
any organization wishing
speakers on the subject of
translator television or the
Rogue TV, Inc., plan.
