Economy Due
To Resume Climb

Around Mid-Year

the economy will resume ns
upward climb around the
middle of the year.
The forecast came from
Raymond J. Saulnier, chair
man of the President's Coun
cil of Economic Advisers.
Saulnier testified on Jan. 16
before a House "Appropria
tions subcommittee consider
ing a $375,000 appropriations
request to finance the work
of his office.
At the same time Budget
Director Percival P. Brun
dage commented that predic
tions by government econo
mists of when the slump will
end range anywhere from im
mediately until next fall.
Brundage'i estimate is July
1.
Will Hasten Day
In his own cautious esti
mate on the probable date of
the upturn, Saulnier said that
members of the Economic
Council would do everything
they could to hasten the day.
He said a number of factors
suggest renewed economic
growth. He said indications
are that the decline in busin
ess spending for plant expan
sion may have touched bot
that the worst of the ex
port slump is past; that de
fense spending will register an
upward impact; that house
building is about to start up;
and that state and local spend
ing Is rising.
Promotions Listed
By District BLM
Several recent promotions
have been announced by the
Medford district of the bu
reau of land management.
William Donovan, former
ataff forester in vhe Medford
office, has been transferred to
the unit forester post of the
northwest unit of the district.
The unit is located in north
west Josephine county.
Jack A. Tompsen, former
northwest unit forester, has
been transferred to the north
east unit. The unit is located
In the Butte Falls and Evans'
creek areas in Jackson coun
ty. Tompsen is now the. senior
unit forester on the staff.
Dwight L. Putun has been
appointed as a temporary staff
forester for the Medford of
fice, according to Ross Young
blood, district forester.
Youngblood said the trans
fers resulted from the recent
promotion of William B'Jore,
former unit forester for the
Medford northeast unit, to be
district forester for the BLM
in the Ukiah, Calif., office.
Alternative To
Coexistence Told
Portland OP) Charles A.
Sprague, former Oregon gov
ernor, said Monday that this
country's alternative to coex
istence with Russia is "death
to one or both" nations.
Sprague, publisher of the
Oregon Statesman in baiem,
spoke at the annual confer
ence of Chamber of Com
merce managers from Ore
gon, Washington and Idaho.
He said that "preserving
world peace and at the same
time saving the institutions
we hold dear will tax the
talents of our leaders for
generations and the intelli
gence and spirit of our peo
ple." Sprague warned against
asking Congress for local fed
eral projects which might add
to inflation. He said this coun
try must maintain its eco
nomic strength.
"If untimely or improvi
dent local demands impair
that strength, they weaken
our nation for the interna
tional competition into which
it is now thrust."
1,346 Businesses
Issued Licenses
City business licenses is
sued since Sept. 1 total 1,346,
according to City Recorder
DarelJ Huson.
He said total fees collected
amounts to 525,565.26, or
slightly more than $19 per
license. The total does not in-
elude returns mede to hotel,
motel and apartment house
operators under an amend
ment to the license ordinance
passed by the council late in
August last year.
Business firms operating in
' Medford must have a license,
Huson said.The fee will be
pro-rated to" Sept. 1 this year
so firms will not be assessed
. for a full year, he explained.
