Getting laughed at by
"everyone" is no fun either,
but Clara may well reflect
that anyone who takes plea
sure in viewing somebody
else's discomfort must be aw
fully desperate for something
to laugh about. Their inter
est in the personal affairs of
others also reflects quite an
emptiness in their own lives.
Clara's problem with her
husband is an entirely sepa
rate matter. The situation is
certainly not pleasant. If Clara
can push aside her feelings
about what others think, she
may be atle to concentrate
on finding a peaceful way to
change things in her home.
Possibly she could interest
her husband in the idea of a
planned budget. If she can
show her husband how she
can provide more comforts for
the famtly without being ex
travagant, he may be willing
to give her more say about
spending. She should point
out that he in no wayloses his
position as head of the family
if she spends on things they
both agree are necessary and
desirable. ,
It is doubtful whether it is
any more desirable for the
woman to have full control
over the purse strings than
the man. Most men prefer not
to be bothered with such mat
ters as household spending.
But if Mike is interested, he
should be willing to sit down
and discuss a reasonable
spending program with his
wife.

The clinical picture of lead
poisoning in children is us
ually different from that in
adults. In children, the brain
is more likely to be injured, ,
while in adults, there is more
colic with perhaps pains in i
the hands and legs. A sad
feature about lead-poisoning
in children is that, unless the
doctor who sees thhe patient
is a good diagnostician, he is
almost certain to miss the dia
gnosis. He will fail to think
of the possibility, and hence
will not order the necessary
tests on the blood and the
urine. The symptoms are most
likely to appear in the sum
mer, when, with the heat of
the sun, the paint tends to
flake up and becomes soft so
that the child can eat it.

sor of zoology at Oregon
State college and recognized
as an international authority
on sponges, died in a Portland
hospital Tuesday after a brief
illness.
Dr. de Laubenfels, who
came to OSC in 1950 from the
University of Hawaii, just
last week was awarded a
Fulbright grant to make a
study of Australian sponges,
particularly around the Great
Barrier reef.
During his scientific career
he worked for at least 10 na
tional or international re
search institutions including
the Carnegie Institute and
the National Research council.
