ed at Crater Lake National
park late yesterday, the park
service reported. No new
snow was reported, and there
were 143 inches on the
ground, compared to 66 inches
last year and 122 inches in
1956. Chains were advised on
Highway 62 and from Annie
Springs to the rim. The warm
ing hut will be open today,
park service officials said.

ment with a 54-hole total of
204 after a round of 66 Saturday.

Jay Herbert, of Sanford, Fla.,
played fine golf and sank a
15-foot birdie putt on the
final hole for a 69 and 205,
Venturi stole the learship
with one of the finest rounds
of the tournament. - ' -
with Ashland and Medford.
The Cavemen moved to the
decision after trailing the
Grizzlies 32 to 31 at the third
quarter halt. GP had a 14 to
9 quarter and 24 to 15 half
time margin.
Free shots made the dif
ference on the scoreboard.
The Cavemen put in 19 of
20 attempts and Ashland 11
for 19. Ashland 16 field goals
to 14 for Grants Pass.
Jerry Putnam topped all
scorers with 26 and for the
Cavemen Bill Maurer had 16
and Leo Daniels 14 for Ashland.

while Phoenix held to its
third spot status by pounding
Illinois Valley 65 to 42.
Jerry Fox sank two free
chances with 10 seconds to
go to break a 51-each knot for
the Bruins of Brookings. Bill
Turner of the Eagles had op
portunity to tie the mix with
three seconds left but missed
the bonus after making the
initial shot on an one-and-ohe
foul.
A jump ball followed the
second gift try. Eagle Point
controlled the tip but Turn
er's last second field attempt
didn't go in.
Eagles Go Ahead
Brookings headed 17 to 12
at the quarter and 29 to 24 at
the half but Eagle Point, pick
ing up in its rebounding and
sparked by the shooting of
Turner and Bill Hubbard,
hopped on top 43 to 39 in the
third canto.
The Eagles were cold as the
final chukker opened and
Brookings caught up at 45-all.
Fox with 19 and Bill Work
inger with 14 were the Bruin
chief scorers while Turner
had 15 and Hubbard 11 for
EP. Hubbard did a good job
as replacement for usual
starter Wayne Christian. Ron
Veach and Christian, EP reg
ulars saw limited services be
cause of illnesses earlier in
the week. Christian played
half the game and Veach
much less.
Brookings used its front
line height for rebounding ad
vantage in the first half.

Roy, a 56-foot yawl skippered
by a steel corporation execu
tive, won the Lipton Cup
ocean sailing race Saturday
in the most spectacular com
petition in the 21-year-old
event.
The vessel, aided by a 35-mile-an-hour
off-shore wind,
was in second spot by only
two and one-half minutes on
the first turn of the triangu
lar course but finished the 31
mile race 45 minutes ahead of
the second boat and almost
two hours ahead on corrected
time.

Frosh bounced back in the
second half here Friday night
and whipped the Oregon
State Rooks, 59-48, after
trailing by
the half.
The Rooks had a margin as
large as nine points in the sec
ond period but, with four
minutes to play, the Frosh
found their shooting eye and
took the lead at 48-46.
Roger Johnson had 12
points for the Rooks and
Butch Kimpton hit 21 for the
Frosh.
