into a sweat; their heart may
race and thump; they may
feel numb all over, or they
may feel pins and needles
here and there; they break
out in goose-flesh; they may
feel like running to the toilet;
they may feel weak in the-
knees, and they may feel as
if they were going to faint,
or black-out.
Such people keep asking,
What are these spells what
do they mean? And often I
say, "Your unsteady nerves
are just playing tricks with
many parts of your body."
When they ask, "But why do
I have the spells so often?"
my first question is, "Are
there any very nervous or
eccentric or poorly-adjusted
or epileptic people among
your immediate forebears
persons who could have be
queathed you an erratic set of
nerves?" And practically al
ways the person says, "Yes;
Mother was lust like me; or
"my Aunt Julia, who once
had a bad nervous breakdown,
had these same spells," or
"My daughter already is
getting them."
Fortunately, most persons
have these spells for years
without coming to any bad
end. Especially when these
jitters have been coming for
a few years, they cannot mean
that any organ is seriously
diseased. The "storms" are
coming out of the brain.
Sometimes a woman with
these spells can help herself
much by learning to live with
herself and others much more
peacefully. She can avoid
stupid and tiring conflicts
over many things most of
them unimportant. Many per
sons get help from reading

Health Is Not a
Precarious Thing
I constantly keep seeing
people who look at health
very differently from the way
in which I look at it. To me,
the body is a mechanism
which, in most persons, has
a remarkable tendency to
stay well, or to repair itself
whenever it does break down
in some spot. Hence it is that
I rarely think of taking any
medicine.

has in his pocket he will show
me a tranquilizer or two, sev
eral vitamins, some iron, some
liver extract, an antihista
minic, a relaxant for the mus
cle in his bowel, perhaps two
or three "tonics," a laxative,.
and a barbiturate or two. This
fellow is not taking any
chances with his health! What
is sad is that it does not oc
cur to him that it might take
perfect care of itself, without
any help from him.
Every so often a man of 75
or 80 comes in, just begin
ning to suffer from a cancer
or a high blood pressure, and
he tells me that only once or
twice in his life did he ever
need to go near a physician.
Very different from him is
the woman who brings for
me a list, covering three or
four typewritten pages, tell
ing of all the many operations
and treatments she has had
each year ever since she was
20.
The Couple That Can't
Hare Children
Many people want to know
what they should do when,
after several years of marri
age, they have no children.
The thing to do is to go to
a physician and preferably
one who is interested in the
problems of fertility. A gyne
cologist can test the wife to
see it she seems to be all
right, and he can have the
husband tested. Naturally,
there is no use in wasting a
lot of money on having the
wife operated on or treated
if the fault is all the hus
band's, and often it is his.
Especially in centuries past,
many an unhappy woman has
had to take all the blame for
infertility, when it really was
her husband's fault.
Experts in this field of
medicine often can help in
fertile couples to have the
children they want. There are
a number of things that can
be done to. the wife and the
husband. In several cities
there are offices of the
Planned Parenthood Founda
tion, the officers of which can
help people to find a special
ist skilled in this field of science.
A Cyst Near the
Little Tail Bone
Quite a few persons are
much bothered by a little
cyst in the back, near the tail
bone. If this cyst becomes ul
cerated, it should be cut out i
by a competent surgeon. He
has to get the whole thing
out or it will come back. It is
called a pilonidal cyst.
