Tols Found Living
In Wire Cages in
Trailer at Yakima
Yakima, Wash. W Three
small children who lived
"like frightened animals" in
wire cages built in the back
of a trailer have been turned
over to Yakima County
authorities.
Officials said the two boys,
5 and 2, and a 3-year-old girl,
apparently were kept in the
wire cages most of the day In
addition to being forced to
sleep in them.
Being held at the county
Jail for investigation in the
case were William B. Han
kins, 49, and Ruth J. Mott, 38.
Incident Reported
Deputy Sheriff Jack Run
yan said he investigated the
12 by 14 trailer mounted on
a truck chassis near Sunny
;de. Wash., Saturday after a
salesman reported the chil
dren were caged up in the
trailer. "
Runyan reported he ar
rived at the trailer about
10:30 a.m. and found Hankins
till in bed. He said two of
tha children were still locked
up in the cages which he said
resembled animal cages.
"They looked like fright
ened animals," he said.
Runyan reported the three
. cages were built over a bed
at one end of the trailer. He
. said the cages were small and
the older boy did not have
. enough room to stretch out
inside the cage.
All five members of the
. family lived in the trailer.
- Traveled Widely
Officers said the Mott wom
. an admitted the couple had
been living as man and wife
for the past eight year3. She
. said in that time they had
traveled all over the United
. States.
She told authorities she had
" been married at the age of 16
in Detroit and had eight chil-
dren . by the marriage. She
' said she began living with
Hankins in March of 1950.
She protested she did not
. want to lose the children
when told they had been
turned over to county authori-
- ties.
New England
Gels More Snow
By UNITED PRESS
Snow-laden New England
received more new snow
early today, but the storm
center was moving out to sea.
The Weather Bureau said
. general snowfall in the area
' was expected to stop late to
day as a local disturbance
continued its northeastward
movement across Maine.
A six-hour deposit of two
Inches of snow at Burlington,
" Vt., brought the total snow
depth to 19 inches, while an
extra four inches of snow at
Rumford, Me., piled up snow
depths well over the two-foot
mark.
Vestiges of the heavy rains
which swept across the Gulf
Coast Wednesday fell on the
Carolinas during the night,
and there was general rain
fall in the far Northwest. Rain
also fell in light amounts In
Missouri.
Other than some cooling in
the Northwest and slight
warming in parts of the Da
kotas, there was little temper
ature change around the coun
try. Near the Canadian border
in North Dakota, tempera
. tures were about 10 degrees
above zero, the lowest in the
nation.
Cohen Discusses
Film Biography
Chicago (IP One-time
hoodlum Mickey Cohen, faced
with charges of slugging a
Hollywood waiter, today sat
down with writer Ben Hecht
and his attorneys to discuss
his film biography.
Six squads of detectives,
apparently unimpressed with
the news Cohen is destined
for celluloid immortality,
were waiting for the ex-mobster
Wednesday night when
his plane landed at Midway
Airport.
He was taken to Central
Police Headquarters and ques
tioned for an hour, then re
leased. Chief of Detectives
Patrick Deeley did not say if
the pick-up order had any
thing to do with charges
brought against Cohen by
Hollywood night spot waiter
Arthur M. Black, 30.
Black filed charges saying
that Cohen punched him in
the mouth during a party
celebrating the opening of the
Sammy Davis Jr. show at a
Hollywood night club.
Police said Cohen disdained
a police offer of a bodyguard,
saying "nothing is going to
happen to me. As soon as I
finish my business, I'm leav
ing town."
