Body-Mind Drugs
Combined To Aid
Allergy Victims
LSi ' mr ft
By DELOS SMITH
United Preis Science Editor
" New York HP) Medical
science ha3 combined body-
mind drugs for the benefit of
the allergic. One drug is in-
tended for
the relief of
an a 1 1 er gic
attack and
the other is
used to re
lieve anxiety
which goes
along with an
a 1 1 e r gic at
LSJ ck.
Deios smith It is a prom
ising approach to a medical
problem like the problem of
which came first, the chicken
or the egg? Some scientists
argue that anxiety often
comes before the allergic at
tack and thus is its cause.
Other scientists feel the at
tack produces the anxiety
which makes it worse.
. Drs. Earl B. Brown and
Thomas Seideman of New
York's Montefiora hospital
tested the combined drugs by
the scientifically favored
"double-blind" technique in
97 allergic patients who
ranged in age from nine
years to 76.
Combination Used
The combination was of
the synthetic hormone, pred
nisolone, which is a standard
drug for the relief of allergic
attacks, with hydroxyzine
which is one of the newer of
the "tranquilizing" drugs.
The 97 men, women and
children were in need of med
icine to control a variety of
allergic conditions from asth
ma and- rhinitis (runny nose
allergy) to hives. The asthma
and rhinitis subjects were in
the big majority.
The doctors divided identi
cal vials into four groups.
Into one group they put a
week's supply of the com
bined drugs. Into a second
and third group they put the
hormone alone and the tran
quilizer alone. In the fourth
they put an inert substance,
a placebo, which, chemically,
should have no effect what
ever. All were in tablet form and
looked alike. The vials were
identified by code number
and at the time the doctors
distributed them to the pa
tients, they had no idea of
what patients were getting
which drugs or the placebo.
The patients kept a diary of
their week's experience with
the medicines.
Diaries Compared
These diaries when com
pared with the code numbers
revealed that 75.6 per cent of
the patients ifad had "excel
lent results with the com
bined drugs but only 48.3 per
cent had had such results
with the hormone alone and
only 32.1 per cent had had
them with the tranquilizer
alone.
The doctors in their report
to the American Academy of
Allergy, said they had some
indications that the tranquil
izer mfght permit small doses
of prednisolone to be as ef
fective as large ones. They're
now investigating that possibility.

ing should man conform?
Why eight hours? Saving
just one hour each day would
give each of us an additional
1,050 days, or almost three
years in tne course oi an
average life. And years added
on while we're in the prime
of life, not past it.
Benjamin Franklin origin

sleeping hours to conform

order to make use of the max

earlier in spring and summer
(as do the night-sleeping ani
mals) than in fall and winter.
Remarkable Changes

remarkable changes .in his

upon his place of living. In

Doctors recognizing this are
beginning to state that people
with different metabolisms,
body types and temperaments
may require varying amounts
of sleep at individually estab

Following this, the words
"day" and "night" would lose
their meaning and demand
eating and sleeping would be
the rule. Edison, the spoiler
of darkness, for example slept
only four hours a night but
kept a couch in his workroom
and slept whenever he felt
like sleeping, if only for a

Volume of Poetry
On one of the shelves is a
volume of poetry Young
wrote. These lines were pen
ned 20 years ago:
"Sad are my thoughts for
I am forty
"Sad as the drifting leaves
this autumn day . . .
"Until today my path led
upward
"But now I find myself up
on a constant downward slope
"Which gains in pitch until
I see
"Dim, distantly, a void
"From which departed
friends have turned tired
faces
"And love has lost its zest
"And quest of fortune end
ed."
In the yellowed files of
newspaper clips this quote
from Young:
"When I was a young man,
I decided that if I ever could
get my hands on $60,000 then
I would invest it at 10 per
cent you could do that in
Texas then and retire. My
wife and daughter set my
sights higher. In 1935 and
1936 I found - myself with
much more money than I
could ever spend and I did
retire. But there was a sub
conscious feeling that no mat
ter what you have it just isn't
right only to enjoy life. I de
cided to go back into the
swim."
Suffering Pains
The words of a business as
sociate after a director's meet
ing last week: "He was suf
fering intense pains in the
side and chest," and another:
"He had been seriously ill
twice during recent months
and ... I feel certain a mood
of black despair over his
health was responsible."
"Maybe he was just a man
who was tired, tired mentally,
tired physically, dog-tired. I
don't know."
