Social Security
Has Busy Year
A social security highlight
of the year 1957 was a cere
mony held June 6 recognizing
the 10 millionth person get
ting monthly old-age and sur
vivors insurance benefits, ac
cording to W. V. Nusbaum,
, district manager of the Med
ford social security office.
Last year was important
In other ways, also, Nusbaum
said. He pointed out that it
was the first year in which
social security monthly bene
fits went to people 50 years of
age and older who were un
able to work because of a se
vere and longlasting disabil
ity. .
More 1ian 100.000 of these
disabled people received their
checks in the early part ot
August in payment for the
month of July, the first
month for which disability in
surance checks could be paid.
For the first time last year,
a severely disabled child of a
worker who died insured un
der the law or who was him
self getting old-age insurance
payments, could draw benefit
even if the child was more
than 18.
The armed forces were first
covered in 1957, and now
more than nine out of 10 Am
erican working people have
the protection of the law.
- "At the end of 1957," Nus
baum pointed out, "the num
ber of people drawing social
security benefits was over
11,100,000."
London Landmarks
Threatened by Fire
London HP) The worst
fire since the wartime blitz
Friday destroyed the Smith
field meat market and men
aced other famous landmarks
in the ancient heart of Lon
don. Two firemen had been kill
ed and eight injured in a 24
hour battle with the flames,
complicated by freezing tem
peratures which coated streets
around the blazing market
with sheets of ice.
