The Man Who Suddenly Quits
And Never Works Again
One day an able profes
sional man in his late forties
failed to go to his office, and
he never went
l-ftM again. He
w i could give no
reason for
this, and na
t u r al 1 y, his
wife was left
worried and
puzzled and
much upset.

Dr. Alvare was h a d he
become a bit psychotic, like
some of his relatives, or, dur
ing the night, had he had a
little stroke? Careful ques
tioning of his wife brought
out the fact that, during the
preceding six months, he had
had several little strokes.
After one of them he had
been a bit confused and dizzy
and weak for six days. Anoth
er little stroke left him full
of fears and feelings of dis
couragement. Shortly before
he quit work, he woke one
morning and found himself
unable to get out of bed.
Later, when he got up, he
could not stand without help.
For the rest of that day, when
he tried to stand, he would
fall to the left. .
Because of these happen
ings, I felt it most probable
that the man's wife was right
in her hunch that he had quit
work because another little
stroke had come during the
night. Two years later I felt
the surer of this as I watched
the man slowly become less
and less interested in life,
less active, less firm- in his
walk, and less interested in
keeping himself clean and
neat.
Then one day his wife saw
him get a little stroke in
which he suddenly became
woozy; he walked into a door,
and for an hour was unstable
on his feet. .
Another man was more for
tunate. He, too, in his fifties,
suddenly quit work. He look
ed all right, and aside from
some dizziness, he seemed to
be well, but at his office he
could not even answer his
mail. When I asked his wife
how the trouble started, she
remembered that the evening
before, as he was helping her
wipe the dishes, he had
slumped to the floor. For a
while he said he was dizzy;
and his right hand was numb
and clumsy, but next morn
ing he seemed all right.
Soon Regained Health
When, a few months later,
I saw him and put him on io
dides he soon regained his
health and went back to
work. Six years later, he was
doing well and running his
business.
Some other men I have seen
who suddenly quit work in
their forties or fifties and
could not or would not give
any explanation of their be
havior seemed to me to have

Many a mildly psychotic per
son feels he has to maintain

his sanity, and sometimes he
gets so tired of this that for
a while he gives up. He is like
the alcoholic who says that
every hour of every day he
has to fight to keep himself
from going out and getting
drunk.
I so admire these hundreds
of thousands of men and
women who, in spite of their
daily fight with fears and
compulsions, hang on, and
keep sane, and do a fine job
in this world. Often it is only
their doctor and their close
relatives who know what a
terribly hard fight it has been
and still is.

committee studying fratern
ities at Amherst college has
recommended that they con
tinue on campus.
The committee's report said
that although some under
graduates and faculty mem
bers favor i the abolition of
fraternities, the majority of
both groups would prefer re
taining a social system similar
to the present one.
In addition, it was found
that most alumni were in fa
vor of the fraternities.
The committee said no al
ternative would generate
group responsibility as well
as does the present system.
The committee found alterna
tives would require more col
lege supervision as well as be
ing financially prohibitive.
The committee was com
posed of eight men represent
ing faculty, alumni, trustees
and undergraduates. Its re
port was submitted to the full
board of trustees.
