eral Maritime Board raised
the possibility Wednesday
that ocean-going ships may
some day travel at twice the
speed of sound.
"Why shouldn't we break
the sound barrier" on the
ocean? Morse asked in a
speech to the Propeller Club
here.
"Why should we continue
to think in terms of 30-35
knots? Why shouldn't we
think in terms of mach II,
or beter, at sea?" N
Mach II is twice the speed
of sound, or about 1,520 miles
an hour on the surface of the
earth.
Closer Look Planned
Morse said the government
already intends to "take a
closer look at the possibilities
of hydrofoils for larger ships."
Hydrofoils are relatively
small thin platforms bujlt on
legs beneath a boat's surface.
As the boat picks up speed its
body rises out of the water
and it travels on the hydro
foils reduces water drag and
permits greater speed.
Morse also said the govern
ment has "decided to enter
into a study contract with
private industry" on the pos
sibility of developing a sub
marine tanker.
He said the study will de
cide what the underwater
tanker" will look like, what
will be its speed, size, per
formance and efficiency, what
it can accomplish, what are
its economics."
