Members of the Gold Hill
Grange were surprised at
their regular meeting Jan. 16
by the arrival of a delegation
of, about 100 persons from
nine subordinate granges in
Jackson county.
The visitors included Ore
gon State Orange bteward
Roscoe Roberts and masters
from eight local granges. They
were Bob Bitterling, Pomona
Herb Carlton, Upper Rogue
Otto Niedermeyer, Central
Point; Carl Christensen, Live
Oak; Cyril Farnsworth, Grif
fin Creek; Menno Bachmann,
Upper Applegate; Charles
Johnson, Phoenix and Clifford
Moore, Eagle Point.
Roberts, in his talk, stressed
community service, more
members, greater attedance
and the importance of mak
ing the meetings interesting
He said, in a report from
California grange, they were
giving credit to the HEC for
increased membership. Rob
erts also called attention to
the County Officer's confer
ence to be held soon.
Ada Page, who is also ac
tive in VFW Auxiliary work
presented a resolution spon
sored by the Eagle Point
Grange, which calls for a 400
bed hospital to be established
at Camp White, where build
ing and plumbing facilities
are already available. Both
Bitterling and C. C. Hoover
spoke in favor of the resolu
tion, which they said would
be a great asset to this area
Over 1,000 persons had been
questioned on the matter and
not one objection was raised,
according to Hoover. The mo
tion was passed unanamously
and visitors expressed ap
proval of the resolution.
The lecturer's program was
given by a group from Central
Point and Delmar Smith gave
a talk on rock collecting. Mrs.
Otto Niedermeyer and Mrs.
Fred Kuest sang two duets,
with Mrs. Smith at the piano.
Following the meeting, re
freshments were served in the
dining room by Josephine and
Maryann Loefler, assisted by
Sue Alleman, Bertha Potter,
Lucy Edington and other HEC
members. v

ported on the sick list. Po
mona will meet at Roxy Ann
Saturday, Jan. 25 for an all
day meeting.

MORE ABOUT HEREDITY
One day, as I was chatting
with one of America's very
able and fine psychiatrists,
I
asked him
why so many
of his fellow
s p e c i alists
were playing
down the
facts of her
edity. He
said, "Well,
first, I think,
we feel it is
Dr. Alvarez , Just too dis
couraging to say to a patient
that, because his family is
shot full of psychosis, he and.
some of his .children could
get the disease. This is no
way to begin trying to help
him."
Second, if I could not more
or less close my mind to .the
importance of heredity, I
would get so discouraged I
could hardly go on trying to
help many of my patients."
"Third," and here he blushed
a bit, "there is so much in
sanity in my family that,
when I look at my children I
feel happier saying to myself
that psychosis is due mainly
to environment. Finally,
some of my colleagues and I
are trying to raise money for
research in psychiatry, and
if you admit that insanity is
hereditary, everyone will as
sume that little can be done,
and hence no one will give
you any money."
The reason I keep fighting
for truth in this field is that,
all my life, I have been a
student of science and the
history of science, and I can
not remember any situation
in which men were able to
learn much when they re
fused to face some facts
which they personally did
not like. In science, one must
accept facts, no matter how
disturbing they may be; one
must accept them instantly,
even when they show that all.
one s work done for several
years back must have been
wrong because it was based
on a wrong supposition.
Why Do We Rap Wood?
People ask me why, when
we brag about our health, we
should rap on wood? Because
it is my only superstition, for
years I kept searching
through the literature on
medical folk-lore to find out
why so many of us do this
trick. Eventually, I found
that we don't do it right. The
way we do it canribt do any
good. Usually, we rap wood
lightly after we have said
something such as that we
"haven't had a cold yet this
year." To do it right, as we
talk, we should take a big
stick and bang on the side
of the house and make a noise
that the devil cannot hear us.
The old idea was that if the
devil were to hear a man
bragging in this way, he
would say to one of his min
nions, "Just watch me, and
see what I will do to that fel
low who is so cocky! Watch
me while I take him down
a peg!"
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag
nose by mail.

of C. L. Farnsworth was dam
aged when a large pig jumped
into its path. The porker scam
pered away, apparently un
hurt. . . .
Upper Applegate Grange
Officers of Upper Apple-
gate Grange, meeting Satur
day, Jan. 18, recommended
entry in the 1958 National
Community Service contest
provided suitable projects can
be found. The matter will
be referred to the member
ship for 'final decision at the
next meeting Jan. 24.
The contest, which is co-
sponsored by the National
Grange and the Sears Roe
buck Foundation, offers a first
prize of $10,000. Upper Ap
plegate's 1957 entry placed
eighth in the state among the
77 subordinate Granges in
Oregon which participated.
Recognition was received in
the form of a National
Achievement Certificate and
a cash award ot siu.
Other plans formulated by
the officers were designed to
stimulate attendance and add
interest to programs at
Grange meetings. A variety of
social and fund-raising events
were also outlined for the
year. Endorsement oi me
membership will be sought
for the proposed program of
projects and activities.
Twelve officers attended
the planning session at which
Worthy Master Menno Bach
mann presided. Refreshments
of cakes and coffee and an
informal social period con
cluded the evening.

to remind all Grange mem
bers that 1958 dues are now
payable and that Upper Ap
plegate's goal is 100 per cent
paid up membership.
Japan will constitute the
theme for the display table
at the meeting Jan. 24, and
members are requested to
bring items of interest for ex
hibit, according to HEC Chair
man Edna Sawyer. Sisters
Maude Bachmann and Lula
Brown and Brothers Menno
Bachmann and Forbes Brown
will constitute the serving
committee for this occasion.

FPC Decision Said
To Be Disappointing
Portland (IP) Rollin E.
Bowles, chairman of the leg
islative committee of the Ore
gon Izaak Walton league, said
Tuesday he was "disappoint
ed" that the Federal Power
commission would recommend
construction of Nez Perce
dam.
Bowles made his statement
in connection with an FPC
decision Monday which re
fused a license to a private
firm for the Mountain Sheep
Pleasant Valley project on
the Snake river. The FPC in
dicated it opposed the project
because it did not include a
high dam at the Nez Perce
site.
"We know and every re
sponsible agency knows that
the Nez Perce will eliminate
the salmon runs in the Sal
mon and Inmaha rivers," said
Bowles. He said the summer
steelhead runs in the Colum
bia are dependent in the main
upon the Salmon river.
