U. S. Army Model 1917, a re
volver he had carried in both
World Wars, and he wanted to
replace it.
"I feel better, having one
round the house," he said
as we turned into a gun store.
"There should be no trick in
getting another."
There were several in the
establishment at prices rang
ing from $50 to $80.
The . finish of one was so
good Ted looked at it suspic
iously. He swung the cylind
er out and peered down the
barrel to study the rifling
against a bit of paper.
"It looks as if it had never
been used," he said, closing
the action and studying it
carefully. "Oh, oh. This isn't
a U. S. Army Model 1917."
"What makes you say that,
sir?"
Ted ran his finger along the
underside of the barrel and
the frame. "It should have

other rareties I have that I
don't know about," he re

piece of paper that had been
taken from the corner of an
envelope.
"A customer ordered an
early copy of "Uncle Tom's
Cabin' that I have had for
years up there," he said nod
ding at a vacancy on the top
shelf, "and I found this in it.
It had been slipped over the
corner of a page as a book
marker."
The paper had been cut off
the end of an envelope. The
scissors had shorn off half
the second stamp but left the
one In the corner intact. The
HALF-CENT HAS VALUE ONLY IF A RESTRIKE COIN
The half-cent piece, the
smallest coin the United States
ever struck for general circu
lation, is not usually a valu
able collector's item. But if it
happens to be what is known
as a restrike, it should be
given plenty of consideration.
A restrike is a coin that is
made from genuine dies but
in a different year from the
date It bears.
An acquaintance of mine
who had recently been given
a run of half-cent pieces heard
about the prevalence of re
strikes in that denomination
and decided to check.
He had one. It was an 1836
issue, and how he recognized
it was by the fact that its
reverse side was that of the
coin struck for 1840.
The reverse of both coins
looks identical to the casual
glance. The design consists of

The clerk, who knew his
business, insisted that it was
the identical model, nonethe
less. He placed it side by side
with one of the rejected re
volvers and showed that it
was otherwise the same, even
to lanyard ring in the butt and
the patent dates of 190.1, 1906
and 1908. He even inserted
two clips, of three cartridges
apiece, into the cylinder and
offered to let Ted try it in the
basement gallery.
"How much is it" Ted ask
ed. "Its only SI 10 with two
boxes of ammo."
"Too much," Ted said. "I
want an Army Model 1917.
But a couple of days later,
after hunting through other
shops and thinking over the
offer, he decided to buy it.
It was too late, though.
Someone else who tnew a
good buy when he saw it
had been there in the rriean

design of the stamp, on rose-
colored paper, consisted of a
shield. On it were the words
"Union Square P. O. City
Dispatch Two Cents."
"Have you any idea how
much this is worth?" I asked
Not on this," George said
"I've already looked it up."
He glanced at his desk on
which lay a copy of Scott's
catalogue. "But maybe I can
on something else in one of
those 20,000 "books along that
wall."
I urged him to start look
ing and went over to his desk
The stamp he had found was
put out by a private post of
fice established by one Jos
eph E. Dunham, of New York,
back in 1850. It was hand-
cancelled, with the initials
V.J.
Its value, cancelled, was $25
as against $1 unused condi
tion. a wreath surrounded by the
words United States of Amer
ica and enclosing the words
half cent. Here and there
among the leaves of the
wreath are berries.
If the berries are large, and
if the leaf under the final
S in States lies a little to the
left of the bottom of the letter,
then the coin is a regular
1936 issue. But if the berries
are small and the leaf lies a
little to the right beneath the
final S, then it is a reverse
of the 1840 coin and the coin
itself is an 1836 re-strike.
Value of the restrike ranges
upward to $200 depending on
the condition of the item.
The one my acquaintance
found was only in fair condi
tion. Nonetheless, its rarity
was sufficient so that he was
made an offer of $50 for it
at Luncheon
Gold Hill, Mrs. F. B. Jones,
Medford, David Byers, Med
ford, and Mr. and Mrs. Mel
ford Hood.
Miss Helen Hood was hon
ored at a past queen's ban
quet given for her at the
Tally Ho last Tuesday. Miss
Hood is the retiring honored
queen of Bethel 38, Central
Point. She was presented a
bouquet of pink carnations
and a piece of sterling silver.

Four Men Trapped

coal miners were trapped in
side the Spring Canyon Coal
Co. mine northwest of here,
officials reported today.
A spokesman for the com
pany said the four were lock
ed inside the mine when a
"bounce" caused a cave-in
that sealed off a section of the
tunnel. He said the men had
been trapped since "sometime
between 11 o'clock last night
and 3:30 this morning."

The slaying took place In
the Burlingame apartment the
two girls shared.
This was to be the last day
of testimony before the jury
of five women and seven men
who have been hearing the
case. Both sides were expect
ed to offer final arguments
