Debussy Work on Program
For Philharmonic Concert
Farewell Party

Eagle Point Mr. and Mrs.
Robert McDonald were hon
ored by a surprise party Jan
uary 11 at the home of Mr.
McDonald's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. A. R. McDonald, Spear L
Ranch, Eagle Point, given by
the residents of the neighbor
hood. Mr. McDonald, who has
been in business with his fa
ther for the past six months,
returned to Washington State
college, Pullman, Wash., Mon
day, to complete his training
in veterinary medicine.
At the party, attended by
48 relatives and friends, the
teenagers danced in one part
of the house while adults
played games. The proceeds
from the games were given to
the couple as a farewell gift.
Refreshments were furnished
by the women attending.

daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lu
cius Lull, Old Military road, j
Central Point. The couple
have a seven months old
daughter, Phoebe Ann.

does not yet have a house
number up, it is explained
that it is the only pink house

First plans for the coffee
were made at a meeting of the
guild held Wednesday noon at
Rogue Valley Country club,
with Mrs. Brown presiding. In
addition to the coffee party,
the group made other plans
for the concert of the Phil
harmonic Society of South
ern Oregon to be given Sun
day, January 26, at 3 p.m.
in Medford High school audi
torium. Coffee will be served at in
termission during the concert,
with Mrs. Henry DeVoss, Tal
ent, Mrs. Bruno Pellegrini,
Medford, and Mrs. Brown
serving. ,
Since the Philharmonic soc
iety has a deficit, fund-rais
ing projects were discussed,
Mrs. Brown reported on a
benefit coffee which she gave
recently at her home in Gold
Hill.

ment, playing a group of mar
imba numbers.

Miss Inez Blake was hon
ored at a farewell party
Wednesday evening given by
friends and members of the
Assembly of God church of
Gold Hill.
Miss Blake is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Blake,
and will attend school in Port
land. The evening's social pro
gram was followed by the
opening of personal gifts and
serving of refreshments.

which has been rehearsing un

! ing a stay in Rome after he
had been awarded the Prix
de Rome, three-year scholar
i ship in music. The composi
tion was submitted to fulfill
the scholarship requirements
that the winning composer
must write a major work each
ear.
. Debussy wrote the work as
a musical setting to a poem
by Dante Gabrielle Rossetti
who declared that his poem
was inspired by Poe's "The
Raven." Poe, said Rosetti, had
done his uttermost to portray
the grief of the lover on earth,
and he, Rossetti, was deter
mined to reverse the condition
and give utterance to the
yearning of the loved one in
heaven.
Together with this work,
Conductor Richard Werner
has programmed "Symphony
No. 1 in C major" by Beeth
oven. Also on the program
will be Saint Saens "Carnival
of Animals" with two piano
soloists, narrator and ballet.

Edmund Morse three-act dra
ma, "The Wooden Dish" for
four additional nights begin
ning Thursday, January 23,
and ending Sunday, January
26, according to President Les
lie Boardman.
This decision, the president
said, is in response to a per
sistent demand on the part of
many theater patrons previ
ously prevented from seeing
the show during the heavy fog
during December.
Proceeds from the produc
tion's "biggest box office
night" in the January series
will be donated to the local
March of Dimes fund, Mr.
Boardman said. Tickets may
be obtained from Purucker's
Piano house, Swem's, from
members of the cast or at the
box office.
Making his debut in "The
Wooden Dish" and playing the
leading male role was Dr.
Frank Roberts, who, accord
ing to Director Richard Gra
ham, is not only a "natural" in
the field of acting, but shows
signs of being a real trouper.
Dr. Roberts plays the role of
the 78-year-old Pop Dennison,
storm center of family conflict
in the home of a son and
daughter-in-law.
