Drs. Daniel M. Shapiro and
Ruth A. Fugmann of the Col
lege of Physicians and Sur
geons, Columbia University,
began their experiments with
the idea that "tumor mass"
was somehow connected with
the reason why the drugs
brought about no "cures" in
people.
The drugs have been stud
led in people who had "large,
extensive tumor masses,"
often with spread of cancer
cells away from the original
site. But the laboratory
"cures" were in animals
which had small tumor masses
which had been recently im
planted in them for experi
mental purposes.
True for Mice
In a series of tedious experi
ments,' the scientists showed
that their idea was true for
one type of laboratory cancer

largest electrical equipment

"Today a manager must
anticipate the future and plan
ahead, preferably 10 to 20
years ahead, if his business is
to thrive in a changing
world."
He laid down a series of
management and public rela
tions policies to" win support
of the public and head off
political and union attack. '
He listed the requirements
for customers,' shareowners,
employees, suppliers, distrib
utors and dealers, citizens.

In each of these he stressed
the need of courtesy, fair and
honest company dealings, dig
nity, friendly associations, hu
man considerations, and com
pany recognition that what

Whether it is also true
of human solid tumors and
other anti-cancer drugs, only
the future will tell.
However, there is one ob
vious immediate use of their
knowledge in people. They
suggested it themselves. This
is to follow up surgery for
the removal of tumor masses,
with "courses" of anti-cancer
drugs.
"This not only offers hope
for cure of the microscopic
metastases spreads and in
advertent tumor 'seeding' in
surgical wounds in the so
called operable and potential
ly curable group of cancer pa
tients, but also offers new
hope for those cancer patients
hitherto categorized as incur
able," the scientists reported
to the National Assn. for Can
cer Research.
Cured 57 Per Cent s
In mice they showed that
6-mercaptopurine "cured" 57
per cent if it was injected in
a course starting 24 hours
after tiny pieces of the ex
perimental laboratory cancer
had been transplanted into
them. But if the cancer piece
was allowed to grow for eight
days before the drug was
used, the "cure" rate dropped
to 26 per cent. When it was
allowed to grow for 15 days
(by which time it was a very
large tumor mass) there were
no "cures" whatever.

more regimented and central
ized to survive as a nation in
the nuclear age," and adds:
"The challenge to leader
ship in America is to prove
once again that the free soci
ety is,' practically and philo
sophically, the best kind of so
ciety; that it has vitalities
which are superior to the
challenges of any totalitarian
system, whether the challenge
be military, economic, polit
ical, intellectual, or spiritual."
In the same issue. McGraw
Hill's economist Dexter M.
Keezer, writes on ','Can We
Control Despair?" He holds
that if we were to embark on
an austerity program, we
"would justify Russia's mal
ignantest predictions."
Far from, being in need of
an austerity program, he
says, we are in a position
where to realize a healthy
growth potential, our econo
my must increase its output
of civilian goods and services
at a faster rate than it has
in the last couple of years."

The scientists then experi
mented in mice in whom
tumor transplants had been
growing for 15 days. These
tumor masses were reduced
surgically to less than the
size of tumors which had been
growing eight days. The mice
then were given the drug
"course" and the "cure" rate
was 57 per cent.
In these mice with 15-day
old tumors they also demon
strated that neither sureerv
alone nor the drug alone
coum produce a "cure." In
cidentally, they used the
word, "cure," to mean the
complete disappearance of the
tumor.

committee to discuss the for
mation of a Jackson county
committee on "Services to the
Aging."

local representative on the
Oregon State council, recent
ly formed by Gov. Robert D.
Holmes, as directed by the
49th legislature.

Divide Work
The Rev. Wesley G. Nichol
son, Eugene, chairman of the
State Council and his execu
tive committee, which met
Jan. 8, have divided the work
of the council into six major
areas. They are health, em
ployment, housing, income,
community services and edu
cation. Mrs. Rankin has been ap
pointed to head the state
committee on community
services for the aging which
will cover programs of reli
gious organizations, farmers
groups such as the Grange,
public services of all kinds,
clubs, and social agencies
with programs for the aging
and local councils for the
aging.

veys, collect statistics, and to
