Accounting Firm

Accountants
themselves are
well aware of
the limitations of accounting
and the need for new methods
to make their work better
understood.
Alvin R. Jennings, presi
dent of the American Institute
of Certified Public Account
ants, urges a restudy of the
institute's research program
with a possibility of creating
a research foundation to be
financed by industry and the
accounting profession.
The function of the re
search organization," Jennings
says, "should be to carry on
continuous examination and
re-examination of basic ac
counting assumptions and to
develop authoritative state
ments for the guidance of both
industry and our profession."
God, Country Badge
Scheduled for Scout
Cave Junction The God
and My Country Boy Scout
award will be presented Mike
Hanby, 16-year-old Life scout
of Illinois Valley Troop 20, at
a special ceremony Sunday,
Feb. 9, at the St. Matthias
Episcopal church in Cave
Junction.
Only one such other award
has been given to an Illinois
Valley Scout.
Hanby, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Douglas Hanby of Cave Junc
tion, is the only Scout in the
troop to qualify for the badge.
In 1952, Don Preston, son of
Troop 70 Scoutmaster Meryle
Preston, received the honor.
He is now a practicing minister.
MESSENGER' STOPPED

ly man from Cleveland, Ohio
showed up at the U. S. Capi
tol Thursday shortly before
President Eisenhower ar
rived to make his State-of-the-
Union address. The man

tioned by Secret Service
agents and released. They
said he cleamed to have

Jennings brings out the
problems of the accountant in
giving a clear picture of a cor
poration through a balance
sheet which he explains must
be considered, to a large ex
tent, as historical in character
and largely the reflection of
individual judgments.
He feels that the accounting
profession must increase its
efforts to educate those who
depend upon financial report
ing as to the nature of finan
cial statements and their un
avoidable limitations and of
the accountants' function as
independent certified public
accountants.
Each year the various stock
exchange houses try to ex
plain to their clients how to
read annual reports. There are
vast amounts of material
available on this subject but
the experts continue to bewail
the fact that very little of it is
read.
Waste of Money
Not a few corporations have
been finding to their utter
horror that the beautifully
printed and illustrated reports
their companies issue aren't
even looked at by the stock
holders. One company found this
out when it enclosed the quar
terly dividend check with
their report. Many of its stock
holders complained they did
not get the dividend check
and when pinned down admit
ted they had thrown the en
velope into the waste basket
without reading it.
Hence, market men who do
read the reports say the big
problem isn't in explaining
the intricacies of the report on
the basis of the handling of
figures, but it is getting the
stockholders just to take a
look at the report. Reports
answer many questions stock
holders are likely to ask.
! State Hospital
Parolee Captured
Salem HP Salem police
Thursday caught a 23-year-old
parolee from the Oregon
State hospital minutes after
he had robbed a Salem gro
cery store at knife point.
Clifton Gene Pulley, Win
ston, Ore., was paroled from
the hospital March 1.
Police caught him about
four blocks from Kay's mar
ket where he had taken about
S100 in cash.
Mrs. Floyd McNall, wife of
the proprietor, said Pulley
entered the store about 12:15
p.m. and demanded money
He then locked her in a back
room, but let her out when
customers approached the
store.
Mrs. McNall was able to
whisper to one of the custom
ers to go next door and call
police.
Pulley took the money and
fled before police arrived but
was caught four blocks from
the store.
Gambler Not

Havana (IP) New York
gambler Jose "Joe Rivers" Si-
lesi says that District Attor
ney Frank S. Hogan, who
wants to question him about
the murder of Albert Anasta
sia, can "drop dead" for all
he cares.
SiJesi complained bitterly
Thursday night about the 48
state alarm Hogan broadcast
asking local U.S. authorities
to try and locate him and an
other galmbler, Santo Traffi-
cante, who is also in Havana
Hogan s office knew 1 was
in Cuba a month ago, the
61-year-old Silesia said in an
interview. "If he wanted me
to ppear, he could have
asked me.
"I would have cooperated
willinply then, but now that
he's given me the blast, let
him drop dead."
