LONGSHOREMEN AID 'STARVING' MARINERS Sym
pathetic San Francisco longshoremen line up in front of
the Dutch freighter Cartago and her defiant crewmen
(rear) after the dock workers raised money to buy food
for the mariners. The crew, claiming it is receiving a
"starvation diet," has refused to work and 29 of the 46
men are being paid off. and are returning to Holland to
take up the matter with their union. The trouble started
Christmas day when the ship's skipper cut off the crew's
beer supply after he decided they were drinking too
much. When the ship docked the cook refused to cook
and the crew refused to work. The trouble is costing the
ship's charterers ?5000 for each day the ship is delayed
in port.

Second Cold Wave
Sweeps Midwest
By UNITED PRESS
The second sub-zero cold
wave of the new year surged
into the upper Midwest and
the outer fringe of the cold
air pushed as far south as
flood and snow battered
Texas.
Weathermen said the cold
er air was expected to over
spread most of the eastern
half of the nation by tonight.
The cold front brought
clearing skies to Texas, en
abling hundreds of families
to return to their homes as
floodwaters in the southern
portion of the state receded.
The floods, stemming from
a two-day rainfall of water
that dumped up to eight
inches of water on the Cor
pus Christi area, forced more
than 1,500 persons from their
homes Sunday and Monday.
