Firmer Lumber
Market Indicated
Lumber market news serv
ices have reported that the
prospect of curtailed produc
tion is a major hope for a
firmer lumber market early
this year.
Random Lengths, lumber
market newsletter, said the
industry started coming out
of a two-week hibernation last
week with some producers in
dicating they would be ask
ing slightly higher prices this
year.
Crow's lumber market news
service reported that if mills
which have announced plans
for shutdowns of over a
month carry out these sched
ules, the loss of output could
strengthen prices unless de
mand slumps disproportion
ately. Crow's said prices have held
fairly steady, but the pros
pect of a 2 per cent rise in
rail freight rates Feb. 1 is
tough one for thje industry,
since most mills are not in a
position to absorb the cost.
Random Lengths reported
that plywood producers were
holding prices to existing
levels on both sanded stock
and sheathing while they
waited to see how the holiday
shutdown affected the previ
ous imbalance of production
over orders. t
