I here's something about this time of year that is most conducive to
music. With the excitement of Christmas still in the air and
the New Year in its infancy, music can be the ideal way to relax.
So turn on your new high-fidelity set or phonograph, and let's pre
view some of the newer wax.
TOPS ON THE RECORD SHELVES: The most exciting musical show
of the season is "West Side Story," and while only a few of us will
get to Broadway to see this modern version of "Romeo and Juliet,"
we can all enjoy the thrilling score via Columbia's original - cast
recording of the show. Leonard Bernstein's music is outstanding.
MUSIC FOR FAMILY LISTENING: "Fado and Flamenco Favorites"
is Angel's contribution to the new sound parade. The LP stars Amalia
Rodriguez. From Cadence comes another experience, this one spot
lighting the music from a ballet known as "Rooms." And again, for a
stunning combination of sound and music, spin "Cherry Blossom Time
in Japan," a Decca effort with Werner Miiller. "Marlene Dietrich" is
the latest in Decca's personality series. While the glamorous granny's
voice leaves much to be desired, Mom and Pop should like the item.
On the instrumental side, Coral has released three fine LPs which
should have wide appeal. "This Time with Strings" stars Raymond x
Scott and his orchestra; "Romantic Rendezvous" reveals Steve Allen's
piano work backed by Neal Hefti and company; and for the older folks
there's "The World's Finest Music" as played by Lawrence Welk.
TEEN -TIME TUNES: Coral seems to have set its sights on the jive set
this week. They'll want to audition "For Teen-Agers in Love" with
Teresa Brewer, and then swing to "Teen-Age Party," hosted by the
McGuire Sisters and a hep bunch of sidemen directed by Dick Jacobs.
COVERING THE CLASSICS: Richard Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier,"
featuring Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and an illustrious company, is Angel's
opera offering this week, and it's well worth your listening. From
Capitol comes Beethoven's "Symphony No. 7" as performed by the
Pittsburgh Symphony, and for guitar lovers, a master presents his
wares in "Laurindo Almeida the New World of the Guitar."
JAZZOMANIA: The year 1957 experienced one of the largest-selling
jazz albums of all time, Verve's two-disk package titled "Ella and
Louis." Now these two greats, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong,
are back for an encore with "Ella and Louis Again." You won't want
to miss it. And for 1958, keep your eye on Toshiko Akiyoshi, a fine
young Japanese pianist. Listen to "Toshiko Her Trio, Her Quartet,"
via Storyville, and see what we mean.
Take Barney Kessel on guitar, Shelly Manne on drums, add the -incomparable
Ray Brown, and you have Contemporary's new "The
Poll Winners." "The Swinging Guitar" is another bit of jazz guitar
artistry, this time performed by Tal Farlow on Verve.
SAMPLING THE SOUND TRACKS: Warner Brothers hired a sing
ing actress, Ann Blyth, for "The Helen Morgan Story," then hired
a singer, talented Gogi Grant, to handle the actual vocals. RCA has
issued the original sound track, and youH love it. "Man of a Thousand
Faces" will come up for Oscar consideration several months hence,
and the movie's sound track on Decca also deserves an award.
