the University of Georgia, classes are held
in a poolroom. Listed as "Bowling-Billiards," the
course is an elective in the physical education de
partment. Half the class plays billiards while the
other half bowls, then they swap tables and alleys.
Westerly High School in Providence, R. I.,
offers a home-maintenance course to teach female
handymen the intricacies of woodworking, elec
trical maintenance, plumbing, metal work, solder
ing, concrete mixing, and wallpapering.
The Denver Extension Center of the Univer
sity of Colorado offers a course in a neglected sub
ject "Common Sense'
Because too few colleges "indoctrinate their
students in the fine points of football," the Univer
sity of New Hampshire inaugurated a one-game
seminar in football for freshmen. While the novices
watch, the varsity scrimmages and a coach explains
the strategy of the plays.
The curriculum at Hunter College in New
York includes a course in "Basket Weaving."
A renowned Danish physician, a married
woman herself, gives a two-week course in Copen
hagen on "How to Take Care of Sick Husbands."
The University of Chicago holds a class on
successful operation of movie theaters. The course
is labeled "Pictures, Popcorn, and Profits."
New York University gives a course for
aspiring thespians, titled "Fencing and Swordcraft
for the Stage."
Harvard conducts a program to train experts
in steering giant electronic brains through busi
ness and industrial problems. As baby sitters to the
calculators, the specialists discover what prob
lems can be solved by the machines. Completion
of the course leads to a master of science degree
in data processing. 1
. The New School for Social Research in New
York has a course on American show business
which includes evening field trips to night clubs
and burlesque theaters. -
Purdue's adult-education division teaches
"Fundamentals of Contract Bridge."
The University of Michigan offers a two-day
short course in "Plumbing Problems."
A course in "The Care and Mending of Chil
dren's Underwear" is available under Columbia
University's extension program.
