MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
The Muscular Dystrophy as
sociation of America (39
Broadway, New York 6) has
been campaigning for money.
Already S13
million have
been raised to
finance a pro
gram of re
search, educa
tion and help
for patients.
Muscular dys
trophy is a
chronic crip-
Dr. Alvarez nlinff disease
of the voluntary muscles. The
muscle tissue slowly wastes
away. The cause is unknown,
but it is thought to be due to
some defect in body chemis
try. As yet, no cure has been
found. They say that more
than 200,000 people in the
United States suffer from this
curse. Two-thirds of the pa
tients are children between
the ages of three and 13
years. Muscular dystrophy
usually weakens the victim's
muscles to such an extent
that he or she sucumbs to
some disease such as pneu
monia or even a common cold.
Parents may first note that
the child has trouble climbing
stairs, or he is unable to keep
up with his playmates when
they play running games, or
he seems more clumsy than
his brothers and sisters. He
may find it unusually hard
to suck any drink up through
a straw. He may have a wad
dling, unnatural gait, or a
strange, flat smile, or abnor
mally large calves in the
backs of his legs. If these
symptoms should show up in
a child he ought to be exam
ined, preferably by an able
neurologist.
A Mental Disorder
Due To A Chemical
Every month now there ap-
Cases Involving
B-B Guns Increase
Medford police have report
ed a recent increase in the
number of cases involving B-B
guns since Christmas.
Police said that sale of the
guns is not illegal but dis
charging the guns in the city
limits is illegal. Police urged
parents to caution their chil
dren about use of the guns in
the city. Shooters also were
urdged to find open fields
with good backstops before
using the guns.
Police said several cases of
broken windows caused by
B-B guns have been reported
since the holidays. Several
cases of children shooting at
each other have been report
ed. Officers warned shooters
that injuries to children can
result easily from careless use
of the guns. Police added any
one caught misusing the guns
could have them taken away
in addition to being fined in
municipal court.

pears more evidence to show
that certain mental disorders
can be produced by some
harmful chemical that is cir
culating in the patient's blood.
For instance, it has been
known for years that a certain
type of feeble-mindedness in
infants is due to the failure
of the body to split up and get
rid of a substance called phe
nylpyruvic acid. These chil
dren were born without the
special chemical in the liver
which normally enables all' of
us to ' get rid of this hurtful
substance.
Now, in the National Heart
Institute in Bethesda, Md., bi
ochemists have been studying
the chemical mechanism
which ruins the brains of
some 60,000 children in this
country. It begins when an
element of our food, called
phenylalanine is not handled
properly in the body. This de
fect is hereditary, much as is
the defect in diabetes or gout.
In a normal person all phe
nylalanine which is not need
ed by the body is converted
into another substance called
paratyrosine that can then be
excreted in the urine. In a
sick person the chemical that
does the harm to the brain is
called ortho-tyrosine. When
this is injected into rats they
become highly excitable and
eventually go into convul
sions. The hope now is that
when a feeble-minded child
is found to have this defect,
some way will be devised for
getting rid of the- hurtful
chemical.
