Way of Life

to the jaybirds the way some
folks do go on about New
Yorkers and our delightful
way of life.
"Why are people in New
York so different?" asks Wil
liam Zukerman in a letter to
the Herald Tribune. "Why
are our taxi and bus drivers
so rude most of the time? And
why are "they the first to lose
their tempers with the people
whom they are supposed to
serve, and become arrogant
at the slightest crisis?"
Busses Too Crowded
He waxes unhappy over the
treatment accorded stranded
people trying to get home in
the recent subway strike. He
and scores of other stood on a
busy corner in a heavy rain,
he says, with passing buses
too crowded to enter, ' and
passing taxis even empty
ones refusing to stop.
Furthermore: "Everywhere
around us a stream of huge,
sleek cars, some of them pal
aces on wheels, was passing
by, literally in the hundreds,
shining beautifully in the wet
evening. Most of these cars
had a capacity of six and even
more passengers and carried
only one, possibly two, peo
ple. Zukerman contrasts this
with a general strike in London-
in the 1920s, where he
saw every ear packed with
persons picked up by the driv
ers who went out of their
way to take them to destina
tions; and taxis were shared
by several persons.

Sparkman To Fight
Farmer Migration

forts to move farmers in

Driver Had Reason
For Staggering Walk
Salisbury (IP) Police ar
rested Bryan Turner, 46, for
drunken driving when he
staggered blindly from his
van after an accident.
A court here Wednesday
dismissed the case against
him and awarded him $100
costs. He wasn't drunk, doc
tors said, his neck had been
broken in three places in the
accident.

garian revolt, was executed
Thursday shortly after the
Communist Supreme Court
confirmed his death sentence,
Budapest Radio reported to
day. Kovacs was accused of
having led an armed group
during the 1956 uprising. He
also planned to establish an
extreme right-wing party after
the revolt, Budapest Radio
said.
