a sharp cut In the price of tel
evision sets. But the price of
vodka, champagne, cars.
rugs and other consumer lux
ury items increased sharply.
Vodka increased 20 per
cent from the current 30
rubles (about S7.50) per half
liter. Champagne went up 17
per cent. Autos, rugs and mo
torcycles rose about the same
amount.
Television sets dropped
from 14 to 18 per cent to
about S350 to S475 per set.
The Oskvich Volkswagen
type cars rose 20 per cent to
about $4,000. The Volga four
cylinder car which resembles
the Studebaker rose to 58,000.

let type rose to about $5,000.

Nervous Bloaters
Several women want to
know what is wrong when
they bloat either suddenly, or
gra dually,
during a day,
and look as if
they were 8
months - preg
nant. As they
say, during
the night they
usually go flat
again without
passing any
gas. Perhaps
Br. Alvarez
a doctor once x-rayed the
woman while she was bloated
and was surprised to find that
there was no excess of gas in
her bowel. One woman said
that, with the bloating, she
has so much pain that her doc
tor sometimes gave her an in
jection of morphine. When he
did, she would suddenly go
flat, without the passage of
any gas.
I was able to tell these
women, that, years ago, I des
cribed over 90 - such cases
which I had studied. In every
case the bloating was not due
to the presence of extra gas in
the abdomen; it appeared to
be due to the forcing forward
of the abdominal contents by
muscles on the back of the ab
dominal wall. I, too, have seen
many of these women sudden
ly go flat after an injection of
morphine, or while they were
vomiting, or when they were
given a little anesthetic. Quite
a few of the patients I saw
had been operated on, some of
them several times, but the
surgeon had never found any
cause for the bloating.
All Highly Nervous
I have found that all of
these women were highly ner
vous; some had an emotional
problem that was a bit too
much for them, and in some
cases, there was no question
that the bloating was hysteri
cal in nature. Several of the
women got better only when
they either married the man
or divorced him!
I am sorry to say that, after
30 years or more of studying
these women, I don't know
how to keep them from bloat
ing, and I don't know of any
safe drug that will make them
go flat! I won't give morphine,
because I know too many of
these women who took it and
got the habit. I know some of
these women who tell me that,
if in the evening they have to
go out with a beau, they will
not eat' all day, and thereby
they will keep from bloating.
An important thing the wom
an should know is that there
is no use in being operated on;
also, the bloating "does not
turn into anything." Some
times there is pain with the
bloating and sometimes there
isn't. There are all degrees of
this type of bloating. Fortun
ately, in thousands of cases,
the bloating is not marked
enough to cause deformity and
embarrassment. Naturally, the
trouble can be most distress
ing to a young unmarried
woman.
What To Do About
An Extra Breast
A few women want to know
what to do about an extra
small breast they have, per
haps up near the armpit. I
doubt if they need worry
about it. I have never seen
one of these extra breasts be
come cancerous. In rare cases,
one will see a small breast
stuck onto one of the normal
breasts.
I have seen as many as
three extra small breasts on a
j man. To the student of evolu
tion, these findings are very
interesting. They show, as
many other facts show, how
much we men and women
have inherited from our ani
mal ancestors who lived many
million years ago.
The Man Who Couldn't Sleep
Tome people are so funny!
I remember well a man who
came in from the country to
see me, complaining about
some indigestion. That night,
about one in the morning, he
called me on the phone to say

could wake a druggist and get
some sleeping-medicine. I de
clined to attempt this, but
said that next day I would
give him some sleeping-pills.
I did; but the next night,
about 12, he called and said,
"Doctor, an hour ago I took
one of the pills, and I am still
not sleepy; what shall I do?"
1 said, "Take another pill." At
2 o'clock he called me and
said, "I did what you said, and
I slept till now; now I am
awake again, and what shall
I do?" I said, "Take another
pill." At 4 o'clock he called
me and said, "I slept till now,
now what do I do?" I said,
"This I am sure about; stop
calling me; I've got to sleep
if I am to do my heavy day's
work tomorrow." This ap
parently hurt his feelings, be
cause I didn't hear from him
again. But I cannot say I was
distressed over this!
Floating Spots Before Eyes
Many persons want to know
if floating spots before the
eyes are dangerous. They ask
if this is one of the danger sig
nals, will blindness follow?
No; practically always the
small floating spots that one
can see if one looks up at the
sky, are harmless. Many of
them are due to tiny droplets
of mucus in the teas that are
bathing the front of the eye;
others are due to tiny foreign
bodies -in the material that
fills the globe of the eye.

Stay Indefinite

Comedian Red Skelton today
faced an "indefinite" stay in
St. John's hospital where he
was hospitalized after an
acute "cardiac-asthmatic"" at
tack which nearly cost him
his life.
Dr. Garth K. Graham, the
comic's phyician, said Skel
ton was "progressing very
satisfactorily" but that it still
was too early to tell how long
he must stay in the hospital.
"He still is a sick man," the
doctor said.
Skelton was stricken Mon
day night at his Bel-Air home
and rushed unconscious to
the hospital where he was
reported to have been near
death.
The 43-year-old comedian
rallied strongly and Wednes
day was able to greet the New
Year with a midnight phone
call to his wife, Georgia, who
had gone home to be with
the couple's children.
Train-Car Crash
Kills Man at Warren
St. Helens, Ore. (IP) El
mer William Roney, 66, was
killed while en route here to
work Thursday when his car
struck a switch engine at
Church road and U.S. High
way 30 junction in Warren.
Walter Ray Grim, Portland,
engineer on the engine, said
Roney had turned off High
way 30 to cross the railroad
tracks onto Old Portland road
and drove in front of the en
gine. Grimm said he was going
about 20 miles an hour and
that he sounded his horn
when he saw Roney coming.
