the high schools in the U. S.
do not offer a course in chem
istry or physics."

ior to the U. S. emphasis on
mass aducation.

wage increase of five cents an
hour effective Jan. 1, "County
Judge D. R. Coow said today.
Judge Cook said the boost
was a "bonus for ... an excel
lent job," and was in line with
a rise in the cost of living. He
said it was separate from anoth
er proposed increase of 10 cents
an hour for the road employees
expected next July.
Russia Promotes
Woman in Party
Moscow (IP) Mme. Ekate
rina Furtseva, the first and only
woman to achieve a prominent
position in. the Soviet hierarchy,
was relieved of her duties with
the Moscow city party commit
tee Wednesday night to work
full-time activities on a nation
al level.
An announcement said Mme.
Furtseva has been "freed from
her commitments" with the Mos
cow unit "in connection with
. . . her transfer ... to perman
ent work as a secretary of the
party Central committee."
Mme. Furtseva will be suc
ceeded as first secretary of the
Moscow committee by Vladi
mir Ustinov, the announcement
said. It said the shift was de
cided at a plenary session of
the Moscow committee.
Western observers today saw
little significance in the move.
They said it was simply a rou
tine decision usually made
Canadians Plan To
Buy Pendleton Hotel
Pendleton (IP) A group of
Canadian businessmen headed
by Charles Nemetz of Regina,
Saskatchewan, planned to pur
chase the lease of the Pendleton
hotel today. Purchase price of
the 100-room hotel was not an
nounced, but it is believed to
be in excess of $75,000.
The hotel is owned by the
Pendleton Hotel Corporation.
Nemetz represents United Ho
tels, Inc., with hotels in Canada
and Washington state. He is
former owner of several Cana
dian utility firms, including
Dominion Electric of Regina.

Norma Jalmadge
Funeral on Friday
Hollywood (IP) The body of
Norma Talmadge has been re
turned to the land of make be
lieve where she reigned as
queen in the golden days of the
silver screen.
The beautiful star of the silent
screen died Tuesday in Las
Vegas, where she had lived
since 19.46 with her third hus
band, Dr. Carvel James. She
was 60. :
Funeral services were sched
uled tentatively for Friday aft
ernoon, pending the arrival
from Florida of Miss Talmadge's
sister, Constance. A third sister,
Natalie, lives in Santa Monica.
All the Talmadge sisters were
famous in the pre-talkie days,
but Norma was the "queen" of
Hollywood as a romantic star
and as the wife of movie mogul
Joseph Schenck, whom she "wed
in 1916.
EX-CONGRESSMAN DIES
Sloatsburg, N. Y. (IP) Robert
Henry Gittins, 87, former con
gressman from New York, one
time owner and publisher of the
Niagara Falls, N.Y., Journal and
a corporation lawyer, died
Wednesday in Tuxedo, N.Y., Me
morial Hospital. Gittins, a Demo
crat, served in the House of Rep
resentatives from 1913 to 1915.
Police radio networks came
into experimental use about 30
years ago.
