next year if the plants receive
proper light and temperature re
quirements. R. Ralph Clark, Oregon State
college extension horticulturist,
says that once the plant has
bloomed, the red leaves will be
in to fall after a week or two
end the plant enters a rest per
iod. It should then be stored In a
cool place, in a basement or gar
Q age, where it won't freeze, and
watered a little about once ev
ery two or three weeks to keep
it alive.
In the spring, the poinsettia
should be pruned so that a few
main limbs are left to start new
growth, planted in well drained
; gardens oil, and left there for
the summer.
Shortened days of fall and
winter then signal the plant to
prepare itself for bloom. Plant
can be brought indoors in the
fall and left to continue growth
. atn ormal periods of day and
night. It is also important to
- keep them out of drafts and at
temperatures of 65-70 degrees.
Pomsettias develop "bloom"
when the days are short and the
nights are long. Short periods of
; night caused by periods of ex
posure to artificial lights, how-
' ever, interfere with blooming.
. Night lights lengthen the day,
and the plant continues to act
q as though it is summer.
Maintenance of normal days

anism to bloom during the holi-
day season, Clark points out.

turn to the Hawaiian Naval base
the first week in January after
a five-month cruise. He is a son
of Mr. and Mrs. Miner Boshears,

held a progressive Christmas din
ner last Saturday evening.
Tom and Jerrys were served
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Clark, and salads at the
Robert Shangle home. Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Klumph were hosts
for the main course. Dessert and
a gift exchange between secret
sisters was held at the home of

The Prevots recently returned
to this country after spending a
considerable period in France
with Mr. Prevot's relatives.
Also here for the holidays is
Charles, the Inskeep's son, stu
dent at the University of Ore
gon. Their younger son, John,
attends school in Medford and
the family group was completed
Christmas day by Ms. Inskeep's
mother, Mrs. Wilma Krebs, who
makes her home in Medford.
The Inskeep's youngest daugh
ter and her husband, Mr. and
Mrs. Paul Vigus and two daugh
ters, Lori and Lindi, who live in
Oroville, Calif., were here for
Thanksgiving. Another son-in-
law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs.
Forrest Riordan of San Francis
co, are spending the Christmas
vacation in Long Beach, Calif.,
with Dr. Riordan's parents.

terday to spend Christmas with
Mr. Nill's parents, Mr. and Mrs
E. E. Nill, 25 Myers court. Other
guests of the Nills for Christ
mas dinner were their son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John
Ousterhout and three children,
Eagle Point.
Gardeners Hold j
Christmas Party
Grove Garden club held the
annual Christmas party Decem
ber 18. A ham dinner was fol
lowed by a party, gift exchange
and program.
The tables were festive with
sprays of holly, Christmas balls
and lighted candles. The serving
table was centered with a minia
ture Christmas tree under which i
miniature packages were
grouped, and the Christmas
table cloth was loaned by . Mrs.
Walter Wilson.
The serving committee was
Mr. and Mrs. George Wimer,
Mrs. Kate Trowbridge and Mr.
and Mrs. Alex Connell.
The large Christmas tree was
an unusual silver fir provided
by Mrs. Clair Shores and had
been cut from high up on Beaver
creek. Garden and flower ar
rangement gifts were exchanged.
Color slides loaned by Delmar
Smith were shown. Mr. Smith
is a lily hybridizer and grower.
Slides of the Peterson rock gar
dens near Redmond, Ore., and of
the Lambert Gardens, Portland,
were also shown.
Next meeting of the club will
be an afternoon session at the
home of Mrs. G. C. Wimer, 3595
Jacksonville highway.
The display table held a
Christmas tree in gold fashioned
from a bamboo rake, colored and
sprayed pine cones and bells.
Annual Tea Held
By Herb Society
The annual Christmas tea of
Rogue Valley Herb society was
held at Girls Community club in
Medford December 17.
Visitors were Mrs. Mabel
Houck and Ms. Leroy Cline, both
Medford.
Officers of the society gave
their yearly reports at this meet
ing, and a great deal of interest
in the uses and growing of herbs
was shown by these reports.
The librarian reported that
much more interest was shown
by books requested of her during
the year.
The society president thanked
committee chairmen for their co
operation during the year.
The meeting was followed by
a Christmas tea served by Mrs.
George Dean, Mrs. L. W. Ling
scheit and Mrs. R. D. Abel, and
a gift exchange by the members.

ture to house-short Russians. It
predicted houses made of glass,
which "will let in ultra-violet
rays so that it will be possible
to sunbathe . . . even in winter

Tent Celebrates
Founders' Day

ters of Union Veterans, cele
brated Founders' day at the last
meeting. The first tent was or
ganized May 30, 1885, and incor
porated December 12 of the same
year at Massillon, Ohio. It is still
an active tent, and the present
national president is a member
of that unit.
Officers were elected, with the
retiring president, Mrs. Elmer
Gott, presiding. They are Mrs.
James Cech, president; Miss
Joan Guyer, senior vice-president;
Mrs. Mabyl Buchanan,
junior vice-president; Mrs. Cleve
Ferris, chaplain; Mrs. Gott, Mrs.
Larry Schade and Mrs. Olaf Se-
verson, council members; Miss
Sadie DeLaMater, treasurer;
Mrs. George Ware, patriotic in
structor. Christmas gifts were ex
changed, and carols sung follow
ing a dinner.
The patriotic instructor" re
ported that she had presented
flags to two Cub Scout dens.
Guests for the meeting were
Elmer Gott, Cleve Ferris and
George Ware. .
Next meeting of the tent will
be January 13 at 8 p.m. in the
Jackson county courthouse audi
torium. Installation will be held.

To Attend Games
Dr. and Mrs. Edwin R. Durno
with their son-in-law and daugh

ley, will leave tomorrow for San
Francisco where they will at
tend the annual East-West game.
From San Francisco they will
continue south to Pasadena to
attend the annual Rose Bowl
game.
In the Bay City the Durnos
and Hensleys will be guests of
Dr. and Mrs. Brian Stringer,
another son-in-law and daughter
of the Durnos, and their young
est daughter, Miss Kaye Durno.
While in southern California,
the Hensleys will visit Mr. Hen
sley's parents in Inglewood.
Grange
UPPER ROGUE GRANGE
Upper Rogue Grange held
their Christmas potluck dinner
and party Friday evening, Dec.
20. The affair was attended by
a large crowd.
Both the Grange hall and the
dining room were decorated in
the Christmas theme by sisters
Chamberlain, Torrance, Rich
ardson and Axtell. Included on
the program was the presenta
tion of gifts to the children that
were left by Santa Claus.
All new officers of the
Grange were installed at the
Eagle Point Grange hall Sun
day, Dec. 22. Caroline Harding,
the outgoing master, was pre
sented a past-master's pin sent
to her by her daughter, M r s.
Ruby Kohernik of Evergreen
Grange in Roseburg. Making the
presentation was incoming mas
ter Herb Carlton. A cake was
also presented to Mrs. Harding
by Mrs. Bob Chamberlain.
After the lecturer's program
a dancing hour was held, with
music being furnished by Mrs.
Ray Gillespie and George Tack-
stein. Assisting with the music
was young Don Gillespie.
