Try and Stop Me
-By BENNETT CERF-
ROBERT GOODRICH writes about an elderly gentleman
who overheard his granddaughter repeating the alphabet
in an oddly reverent sort of way. "What on earth are you up
to?" he asked. She ex
plained, "I'm praying.
Grandpa. I can't think of
exactly the right words, so
Tm just saying all the let
ters, and God will put them
together for me, 'cause he
knows what I'm thinking."
Clifton Daniel, lon-ln-law of
Ex-President Truman, called
on a couple whose 8-year-old
son was reputed to be the best
brought-up lad in town. The
boy lost no time in proving
that his reputation had , been
honestly won. "Good afternoon, Mr. Daniel" he exclaimed, hold
ing out his hand. "I've Just been reading about you in that den of
lions."
On the subject of children, Desmond MacCarthy once remarked,
"Here is something on which I really can speak with authority. I
(have been a child myself."

APPLEGATE VALLEY
Group Views Color Slides
By MAUDE ZIEGLER
Applegate Valley As sur
rounding mountains become
snow covered, several local peo
ple had the chance to view
color slides of the mountainous
areas in their summer beauty.
Ladies of the lower Apple
gate extension unit saw pictures
of Tallowbox lookout in this
area and Chimney Rock look
out in the Antelope section re
cently when members held their
Christmas meeting at the home-
of Mrs. Lester Rich on Thomp
son creek.
The pictures were shown by
Mrs. Curtis Gearhardt, who
manned the Tallowbox post for
a few weeks last summer, and
who had held the post on
Chimney Rock in previous years.
Both are state lookouts.
Speaking of days spent on
the mountain tcps, Mrs. Gear
hardt told her listeners there is
little time to be lonely, with
rising at sun-up and getting
busy with telephone and radio
duties, doing a bit of visiting
and watching for fires. The air
plane patrols sweeping low over
the stations bring companion
ship, too, Mrs. Gearhardt said.
Films also were shown of ac
tivities of Associated Country
women of the World with Mrs.
Marcel LePiniec acting as nar
rator. Unit members also had
revealing of secret sisters and
Mrs. Gearhardt and Mrs. Ed
Goodwin received cakes in hon
or of their Christmas birthdays.
About 32 ladies attended the
meeting. Those from Medford,
besides Mrs. Goodwin, were
her mother, Mrs. Paul Anderson,
Miss Mary Pat Lucy and her
mother, Mrs.- J. Agnes Lucy, of
Cotean, North Dakota.
The Applegate Valley garden
club also saw films on wild flow
ers of the Applegate and Union
creek districts, when they met
at the home of Mrs. Robert Sor
ber Wednesday for their Christ
mas meeting.
Kristy Jones celebrated her
eighth birthday Dec. 11 with a
party at her home. Friends at
tending were Lorna, Gail and
Sherron Snopl, Judy Best and
Marcia and Retha Sample.
A group of local mothers at
tending a Christmas party giv
en by girls of the home econom
ics class of Jacksonville high
school Wednesday were Mrs.
Stanley Larson, Mrs. Ed Flesh
er, Mrs. Rex Davis, Mrs. Bud
Couch, and Mrs. Anna Nelson.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pool of
Portland were overnight guests
of Mr. Pool's cousin, Glenn
Saltmarsh, Monday. After visit
ing other relatives here, they
continued to California to spend
Christmas.
Ruch Parent Teacher associa
tion has cancelled the January
meeting because the meeting
date occurs so soon after the
holiday period. Plans for the
February meeting will be made
at the executive meeting Jan.

Miss Helen Carlson of Port
land held a series of teacher
training meetings at Ruch Com
munity church ... recently. Mrs.
Carlson, who teaches child ev
angelism at Multnomah School
of Bible, came by plane, and
due to the fog in Medford, came
by bus from the Klamath Falls
airport.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sorber
left during the week end for
Farmington Calif., to spend
Christmas with relatives.
Miss Sharon Wilson arrived on
Friday from the University of
Oregon to spend Christmas vaca
tion with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Willard Wilson of Upper
Applegate store.
Mrs. O. F. Morgan left Fri
day for Junction City after
spending a month as a guest of
Mr. and Mrs. Willard Pearson.
Mrs. Gerald Buck will be
among those entertaining with
a family dinner on Christmas.
Guests will include Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Ditsworth of Prospect
and Mr. and Mrs. Dow Lewis
and sons of Medford.
Local leaders for 4-H clubs
have been named here and pro
ject meetings will start in Jan
uary. Leaders of the Applegate
clubs are Arion Christianson,
dairy; Francis Krause, beef;
Charles Flmore, sheep and pigs;
Mrs. Francis Krause, sewing,
and Mrs. Howard Piete, gun
club. Junior leaders include
Mike Harris, fishing, and Rus
sel Elmore, electricity.
Leaders of Ruch clubs in
clude Rex Davis, dairy, with
Fred Straube as assistant; Wil
liam Barker, sheep and hogs;
Armin Richter, beef; John Ram-

Medford Airoort
say, Junior leader of industrial
arts, and Mrs. Harry Stockman
will lead sewing. The tractor
leader is yet unnamed.
Mr. and Mrs. George Jones
and their four children of Steam
boat ranch on Carbury spent
"the night out" Friday, when a
massive slide in the Carbury
road prevented them from get
ting home after the Christmas
program at Ruch school. Upon
seeing the road condition, they
drove back to Copper and tele
phoned Gail Buffington, local
county road foreman, who took
the grader to the scene about
midnight. Unable to clear the
road, Buffington took the fam
ily back to his home at 3 a.m.
to spend the rest of the night.
With aid of a "cat" the road was
cleared next day. Six inches of
snow fell in the Carbury section
Sunday.
Rural Reflections with a
Christmas glow: Even as one in
Judea spoke of the simple things
of His neighborhood, the do
ings of neighbors today in ma
king Christmas preparations
contribute to the joys of the
season. Deep in the midst of
dress patterns, gay prints, cor
duroy and flannel, Grace Hun
ter was seen fashioning a com
plete dolly wardrobe at the
Ruch missionary - meeting to
gladden the, heart of some little
girl on Christmas morning.
The tiny blonde Sample girls,
Marcia and Retha, were the
very essence of Christmas itself
in their bright red dresses and
and "Over the Housetops" to an
auditorium full of people ga
thered for the Ruch school pro
gram Friday evening.
Amid the gay clutter of the
pre-Christmas rush at the Rob
ert Webb home was the problem
of making the compact cones
of the knob cone pine blossom
out with exposure to heat from
the stove then the question',
how far should they bloom?
Webb has made candlesticks
from the pine limbs to which
the cones are attached, and 'says
the cones never open except
from direct heat as from a for
est fire. There are those neigh
bors who miss the beauty of
the outdoor Christmas tree at
the Don Lewis residence. The
tree has been moved to their
new residence on West Main
street in Medford.
