LrA Angelas U Ship
'builderi in Los Angeles, San
- (JD.e&o, and the Puget Sound area
; of Washington may divide a "2
; million dollar martime construc-
tion program during the next
: two yean.
T. The possibility was announced
Friday by Clarence G. Morse,
chairman of the Federal Mari-
time Board and maritime admin-
istrator of the Department of
; Commerce.
' Morse aaid it was likely that
18 cargo ships to be con3truct-
ed for American President lines,
American Export lines, Moore-
; MacCormack and Lykes Bros.,
would be built in west coast
" shipyard.
He said the Todd shipyards at
I Los Angeles would probably
" build two of the vessels which
cost 11 million dollars each.
1 Two similar vessels are slat
' ed for construction by the Na
tional Steel Shipbuilding Co., of
San Diego, and another two
ships, costing 23 million dol-
lars, are to be built in the Pu
get Sound area, he said.
Morse said allocation of the
contracts was contingent on pro
! idential action under a recently
enacted statute which authoriz-
ee the chief executive to allocate
- the contracts to deficiency areas.
Morse spoke at a meeting of
the Propeller club. Port of Los
Angeles-Long Beach.
! At a press conference earlier,
the maritime official said the
United States was ahead of Rus
1 sia in the maritime atomic field.

Police Seek Man
Who Grabbed Girl
Madison, Wis. U" Police
Saturday sought a man, resemb
ling the kidnaper of missing
Maria Ridulph, who locked a
little girl in his car trunk and
tried to abduct her.
Sheriff Fred Goff said the
would be abductor lured a 10-year-old
girl to his car on a false
pretext Friday, then threw her
in the trunk and drove away.
Then the car was trapped in
a traffic snarl in a downtown
shopping center, the girl open
ed the trunk from the inside
and darted away. The incident
occurred as the girl was return
ing from school.
Goff said the general descrip
tion the girl furnished matched
that of the man who spirited
away Maria Ridulph, 7, Syca
more, 111., early this month.
During the unsuccessful search
for Maria Ridulph, authorities
learned from neighbors that a
car had been prowling the
streets of the northern Illinois
town for several days before
her disappearance Dec. 3.
Despite the presence of FBI
agents, and the cooperation of
police and volunteers, no trace
of the curly haired Maria has
been discovered.

Neuberger Called
'Mulish' Thinker
By Sen. Dworshak
Washington TO Sen. Hen
ry Dworshak (R-Idaho), who has
tilted frequently with Sen. Rich
ard L. Neuberger over water
resources development in the
Northwest, Saturday took an
other swipe at his neighboring
colleague.
He issued a statement charac
terizing the Oregon Senator
proposal to "deepfreeze" dam
sites above Grand Coulee dam
in the upper Columbia river
basin as an "example of mulish
thinking."
Dworshak described the Neu
berger proposal as one which
would halt all dam building un
til the problem of moving fish
over high dams is solved.
"This is typical of the Ore
gon Senator's approach, Dwor
shak declared. "All dams in the
lower basin are fine, but don't
build anything in Idaho."
Dworshak said Oregon's jun
ior senator "is opposed to a 500
foot dam on the Clearwater be
cause it would block fish runs;
yet worked like a dervish to
push through the senate a bill
for a 700-foot dam on the
Snake."
"The inconsistency of the
Oregon senator's allegiances all
point to the fact that he is op
posed to Federal dams if they
are in Idaho and private dams
if they are in the Northwest,"
Dworshak's statement contin
ued, "pfalting all dam building
which has been a mystery for
10 years would put a stopper on
Pacific Northwest industrial de
velopments." WITHDRAW SIGNS

Soviet Security
To Ease Tension
Moscow (IP) Soviet Securi
ty Chief Ivan Serov Saturday
promised an easing of Russia's
internal "state of tension."
Serov, writing in the Commu
nist arty organ Pravda, said the
conditions of political unity now
make the internal "state of ten
sion" unnecessary as in the first
years of the Soviet Union but
that external strength and vigi
lance still is needed. '
Employment Drops
In Many Lines
Throughout State
Salem (IP) Employment
in Oregon dropped 15,400 last
month to 471,600 with practic
ally all lines sharing in the
downtrend, the State Unemploy
ment Compensation commission
reported Saturday.
Seasonal industries employed
10,999 fewer persons and repre
sented the major share of the
decrease from 485,900 jobs a
year ago.
Statistics showed 50,200 log
ging and sawmill employees last
month, comparing with 54,600
last year. Plywood employment,
however, gained 600 to 14,700.
Food processing with 16,400
jobs also fell short of the 1956
mark and construction at 22,500
was nearly 2,000 under last
year's report.
Holiday trade gave retail em
ployment a lift but the Nov
ember report showed only 78,
000 working against 83,100 a
year ago. Transportation, util
ities and finance also eased off
somewhat.
Payments to unemployed
workers were close to $3,300,
000 for the first three weeks
of December, bringing the year's
total to an all-time high of 30
million dollars. This will drop
the unemployment trust fund to
around $41,600,000 by Dec. 31,
lowest for this period since 1942.
