Getting Along 'Good'
Anderson, Calif. (W Life is
going along "pretty good" these
days for the ' Danny Schmidt
family.
Schmidt came home Aug. 12,
1955, after spending three years
in a Red China prison camp to
find his wife, Una, had married
Alford Fine, a logger, in the be
lief Schmidt was dead.
At first, Una said she pre
ferred Fine. Two weeks later
she changed her mind and re
turn to Danny along with their
two-year-old son, Danny Jr.
Schmidt, contacted in Ander
son, Calif., said everything was
"pretty good, I guess now. He
said that he was working the
"straight swing" shift at a ply
wood plant and attending school
at Shasta Junior college in the
day-time.
He and Una are the parents
of one more child. The boy,
Christian Joseph, was born on
June 8.
Three Children Die
In Detroit Home Fire
Detroit (IP) Three children
died from a fire which broke
out in a fashionable home on
Detroit's Northwest side early
today.
Victims of the blaze were
Abraham Charles Farris Jr., 13;
his sister, Jessica, 10; and a
brother, Michael, 8. Doctors at
Mount Carmel Mercy hospital
said efforts to revive the chil
dren failed and they died an
hour after the fire.
The father, Abraham, 46, was
awakend by smoke shortly after
midnight. He carried one son.
William, 5, downstairs but was
unable to return for the other
three children because of heavy
smoke.
Firemen said the blaze ap
peared to have started in a li
brary or living room on the first
floor of the two-story brick
home. Farris is the owner of a
large Detroit furniture store.
His wife, Mary, 45, was hospi
talized. ROYALTY TO WED

nounced the engagement of
Princess Marie-Adelaide, daugh

Tuesday did not specify a date
for the wedding, but court
sources said it probably would
take place in the spring of 1958
in Luxembourg Cathedral. Prin

Used Variety of Dialects
The graying actor spent
years in radio using a variety
of dialects.
"In the early days of talking
pictures I dubbed foreign films
from France and Italy into Eng
lish. We radio actors frequently
dubbed four or five roles in a
single film. I remember I once
did 14 different parts.
"When the first Enelish-
made pictures played American
theaters audiences made fun of
them, talking back to the screen
in exaggerated britigarget," Joe
said, slipping into a blighty
pronunciation.
"So I got work translating '
dialogue from English to
American."
He pointed out that few suc
cessful TV actors or emcees can
be pegged as to their origins by
their patois. Even local an
nouncers are losing their
drawls, twangs and brogues.
Accents Limits Actor
"Most actors minimize their
regional pronunciations, and it
is definitely having an impact
on viewers," he claims. "If an
actor does have an accent it lim
its the types of roles he can
play.
''Foreign accents are differ
ent, I suppose. But r can't ima
gine Charles Boyer nlayine a
cowboy or a red cap."
Cotton doesn't cotton to dia
lects, but he refused to lose his
broad "A".
"I simply cahnt say kant,"
he laughed.
He believes southerners from
deep Mississippi conversing
with rural Vermonters would
have more troubla understand
ing one another than they
would interpreting Russian.
Orradually. and thanks fn
large part to TV, these differ
ences are dying out. The mid
western twang has all but dis
appeared," he says.
"The last bastion of inerained
colloqualism is Brooklyn. It
may be hundreds of years be
fore Brooklynese becomes a
dead language, if you get my
pernt."
