Shapes Up As Best
In American Circuit
Editor's note: This 1 the second
outlook of each major league team
for 1958, written by the manager
of each club.
By AL LOPEZ
Written For The United Press
Tampa, Fla. W) They say
pitching wins pennants, and the
way the Chicago White Sox
pitching 'staff shapes up now,
there's no question that it is the
strongest one in the American
league.
Early Wynn, whom we got
from Cleveland, gives us another
good, solid starter to go with fel
lows like Billy Pierce, Dick Don
ovan, Jim Wilson, Bill Fisclfer
and Bob Keegan.
And Ray Moore, whom we ob
tained from Baltimore, repre
sents the kind of man we were
looking for to give our bullpen a
big lift. Moore will handle the
relief work along with Gerry
Staley, Dixie Howell and Paul
LaPalme.
I'm not discounting young Jim
Derrington, either. He's the bon
us boy we're carrying and he
could turn out to be a pleasant
pitching surprise for us next sea
con. There was some talk that we
Urt ourselves on offense when
we gave up Minnie Minoso and
Lary Doby to get Wynn and
Moore. Perhaps we did sacrifice
a few RBI's but I think the added
pitching help we obtained more
than makes up for it. . m
Other Good Hitleri
Besides, I feel we got some
pretty fair hitters in fellows
svSfch as Al Smith Billy Goodman
and Tito Francqpa.
Smith is no slouch at the plate
and the .247 average he had at
Cleveland is certainly not a true
indication of his ability. We
think that a change of scenery
will make a big difference in his
case.
We're counting on Smith as
our left fielder. Jim Landis can
play center field as well as any
one in the league, and we'll have
both Jim Rivera and Francona
available in right field.
: The addition of Goodman from
Baltimore frees Bubba Phillips
for duty in the outfield, in the
event we need him there. Phil
lips is a handy man to have
around because he can play both
third base and the outfield.
We're thinking of Goodman in
terms of third base. Frankly, I'm
not the least bit concerned about
our situation around second base.
We have the best second base
man in the league in Nellie Fox
and Luis Aparicio at shortstop
givJt) our cluS1 as good a double
play combination as you'll find.
Aparicio Hits and Steals
Aparicio's value doesn't end

on the base paths, he led the
league with 28 stolen bases, and
he proved to a lot of people that
he's a pretty fair country hitter,
too.
I think we're in mighty good
shape at first base also. Earl Tor
geson did a great job for us last
season hitting .286 and driving
in 51 runs.
All of us in the White Sox fam
ily are very high on Ron Jack
son. He has much more exper
ience now than he had when he
first broke in and he could really
establish himself next year. He
could even supply some of the
power the critics say we'll be
missing. And we still have big
Walt Dropo for duty at first base,
too. He hit 13 homers and drove
in 49 runs for us last season.
Sammy Esposito gives us the
infield insurance we need in case
of any injuries.
Our catching staff is a good
one with Sherm Lollar, Earl
Battey and Les Moss. Like Jack
son, Battey could come very fast
next year. He has all the tools.
I'll say one thing. The White
Sox look a lot stronger than they
did a year ago, and don't forget,
we didn't miss winning by too
much last season
Tennis Star
Ordered to
Agreement
Los Angeles (IB Pro tennis
champion Pancho Gonzales of
Los Angeles today was under a
court order to live up to his con
tract with tennis promoter Jack
Kramer without an increase in
pay.
Superior Judge Leon T. David
threw out a request to submit the
dispute between Kramer and
Gonzales to arbitration because
the promoter held a valid con
tract and the court ruled Gon
zales had to live up to it.
Gonzales had claimed that
Kramer made a verbal agree
ment to increase his share of the
gross proceeds from, their tennis
tours to 25 per cent from the 20
per cent he had been receiving.

Realty Board Adopts
Resolution on Project
The Medford Realty board
last week adopted a resolution
noting the fire hazard of the
Jackson County Housing author
ity at the corner of McAndrews
rd. and Jackson st.
The board said it believed the
project was a fire hazard be
cause: "1. It is lacking in heavy duty
electrical wiring and switch
boxes to carry the loads imposed
on it. The construction through
out was made with wartime ma
terial. "2. There have been several
fires there exposing tenants,
school buildings and residences.
"3. We are of the opinion that
in view of these conditions being
of public knowledge that the
city could be exposed to damage
suits."
The resolution wa3 adopted at
a meeting Friday. Bill Frohn
mayer is president of the Realty
board.

Russo Gains Win
Over Tony DeCola
New York (IP) Danny Rus
so, 19-year-old Brooklyn welter
weight followed the old ring
axiom: "Find a target you can
hit, and keep hitting it," as he
won an upset majority decision
over Tony DeCola Monday
night.
In their 10-round TV fight at
St. Nicholas arena, lanky De
Cola's body became the number
one target for Danny's busy
fists. Then DeCola, also of
Brooklyn, began dropping his
gloves to protect the body, and
Russo found he could hit the
chin with left hooks.
