Surgery For Heart Disease
At a recent meeting of the
American College of Surgeons,
o Dr. Richard T. McDonald and
associates, of the Henry Ford
Hospital in Detroit, reported au
topsy studies on 113 hearts
which showed that less than 13
per cent of the patients who had
died of arterio-sclerotic heart
disease could have benefitted
from coronary artery surgery of
any kind. The difficulty is that
when a bad heart attack comes,
it may come only after several
arteries in the heart have been
diseased for a long while. They
ars so badly narrowed that the j
problem of getting plenty of j
blood to the heart muscle is too
great to be solved by any meth
od as yet available. It is Inter
esting to note that at this meet
ing of 8,500 surgeons,. many of
the papers were on heart sur
gery. Transplantation of the Heart
Dr. W. R. Webb, of the Uni
versity of Mississippi has re
ported success in transplanting a
heart from one dog to another.
He and Dr. H. S." Howard per
formed this operation 30 times.
' Sometimes they transplanted the
lungs with the heart, and some
times they kept the heart in deep
freeze for a while until they
were ready to use it. The techni
cal problems of making the
transplantation have been solv
ed; what hasn't yet been solved
is the problem of keeping the
heart functioning for months or
years.
At the surgical Congress, Doc
tors S. F. Sayegh, Oscar Creech
Jr., and J- H. Harding, of Tulane
University, reported the trans
plantation of hearts from new
born puppies to adult dogs, or
O from small rabbits to large ones.
Unfortunately, these transplants
did not stay.
Transplantation of Skin
As I have mentioned in this
column, one can easily trans
plant, skin from a father to his
badly-burned child, but the skin
won't stay functioning for more
than two or three weeks. The
body of .the child won't accept
it and keep it; it throws it off.
Much research is being done in
an effort to solve this problem,
and it will be a great day for
" surgery when it is solved. At
present, the only transplanted
piece of tissue which will stick
to a person rrrust come from his
identical twin. There are caes
now on record in which a kid
ney has been transplanted from
one identical twin into the other,
and has remained to function
well.
Hopeful news in regard to the
preparation of transplants that
would stay came from the Uni
versity of Minnesota, where Doc
tors R. H. Egdahl, F. D. Roller,
and R. L. Varco reported that
they transplanted skin from one
rat to another, and had it sur
vive for as long as nine months.
This is a tremendous achieve
ment. It was done by preparing
the recipient rat by early injec
tions of cells from the lymph
nodes or spleen of the donor rat.
This preparation must start
shortly after the recipient is
born. Then, when the rat grows
up, he will accept foreign skin
and keep it for months.
Subcommittee To
Consider Road Bill
Portland (IP) First item on
the 1958 agenda of the Senate
roads and highways subcom
mittee will be the bill of six
Pacific Northwest Democratic
senators for an ultimate $50
million authorization for Nation
al forest access roads, Sen. Rich
ard Neuberger (D.-Ore.) said to
day upon his return from region
al hearings on the measure. This
would be by far the largest ac
cess roads fund in history.
Neuberger said he had re
ceived this assurance from Sen.
Albert Gore (D.-Tenn.) chairman
of the subcommittee which is
considering the bill. Neuberger
added that Gore told him "he is
fully convinced of the soundness
of the legislation and is highly
hopeful of its adoption by the
Senate."
Neuberger said the clinching
argument with Gore was testi
mony by a number "of Oregon
lumber operators, during the
hearings in Portland on Dec. 11,
that private construction of ac
cess roads actually was fi
nanced out of the funds which
the government collected for
National forest stumpage.
