Sayings Bond Sales Show Increase Here
Savin2s bond sales in Jackson
couniy totaled $35,703 last
month, compared to S93,291 in
November, 1956, the second con
secutive month showing an in
crease over last year, according
to George W. Mimnaugh, state
director of savings bond sales.
Total sales for the year
through Nov. 30 in Jackson
county were S912.S26, compared
to a total sales of $1,111,311 for
the same period last year, he
noted.
State sales during November
totaled S2,285,129, compared to
last November's total sales of
$2,937,310.

Legislative Session !Grim Hope Held
Fizzles Saturday
With Small Turnout
Salem W A meeting of the
legislative interim committee on
legislative reorganization fizzled
here Saturday when a quorum
of five members failed to show
up.
Chairman Keith Skelton. Eu
gene Democrat, said he was sor
ry only eight days notice of the
meeting had been given, but felt
committee members at least
should have notified him of their
inability to attend.
Skelton said the committee
will meet early in January.
One committee member noti
fied Skelton of a prior commit
ment and another did not come
due to bad weather.
Present to testify before the
committee were State Finance
Director John F. Richardson. As
sistant Secretary of State Warne
Nunn, and Fred J. Paulus, depu
ty state treasurer.
Both Richardson and Nunn
submitted letters to the commit
tee outlining their responsibili
ties in connection with the state
building program.
The committee has until next
Oct. 1 to recommend measures
and reorganize state government
and decide what, if any. boards
and commissions should be elim
inated or consolidated to im
prove governmental efficiency.
Committee members present
included Rep. Norman Howard,
Portland Democrat, and Sen.
Howard Belton, Canby Republ-can.

On Finding Girl

search of lovers' lanes and garb
age dumps Saturday held out
grim hopes of finding Maria Ri
dulph, 7, who disappeared when
a strange man offered her a
piggy-back ride.
The curly-haired girl, object
of an intensive search by thou
sands of officials and civilians
since Dec. 3, was offered the
ride by a man known only as
"Johnny." Police were informed
of "Johnny" by Maria's girl
friend, who was with her at the
time.
Officials announced the new
search Friday after reporting
they had abandoned previous
plans to dynamite hard-frozen
ponds where the girl's body
might lay concealed.
Richard Auerbach, head of the
Chicago office of the Federal Bu
reau of Investigation and one of
the leading police figures at
Sycamore, said the dynamite
plan would not "now be feas
ible" because warm weather
probably will melt the ice on
the Kishwakuee River and near
by ponds.

Fourteen Killed
By Tokyo Storm
Tokyo (IP) Fourteen persons
were killed and 148 injured Fri
day in a storm that lashed west
ern and southern Japan with
heavy rains and winds up to 90
miles an hour, reports reach
ing police headquarters said
Saturday.
Twenty-nine persons were list
ed as missing.
The storm subsided early Fri
day and was followed by un
usually warm weather. In Tok
yo, the temperature zoomed to
73 degrees at 1 p.m., the hot
test December day since 1890
when 74 was registered.
Police reports said 222 homes
were destroyed and 45 damaged.
More than 2,000 houses were
flooded. Sixteen small craft
were sunk, 13 were missing and
92 damaged. Telegraph lines
were down in 567 places.

ing. George Stacey, auditor, has
been requested to make a survey
of the district budgets for the
past few years and to determine
the value of each district. The
information will be used by the
board in considering emergency
requests.
New Plywood Plant
Set For Sheridan
Sheridan, Ore. (IP) Sheridan
will be the site of a plywood
plant manufacturing its products
from hardwood the only such
plant in Oregon.
Announcement of the site se
lection was made Saturday by

Witness Cracks
Hoffa Testimony
New York HP) The testimony
of a defense witness backfired
Friday and put a visible crack
in the alibi of James R. Hoffa
at his wiretap conspiracy trial.
Hoffa had stated he was in
Seattle,, Wash., at a Teamsters
conference between July 6 and
July 10, 1953. The government
contends that on July 9 Hoffa
was in. Detroit at Teamster head
quarters supervising the installa
tion of wire tap equipment.
Friday, however, Raymond B.
Klinke, a United Airlines execu
tive, testified airline records
show two tickets for Hoffa and
his wife had been purchased
June 26, 1953, for the Detroit
Seattle run.
Under cross-examination, how
ever, Klinke admitted that there,
was no way to prove that Hoffa
actually made the flight. He also
admitted that even if Hoffa had
gone to Seattle, he could have
returned to Detroit by plane the
night of July 8 in time to super
vise the alleged wiretap installation.

Explanation Asked
On Russian Claim
Rocket Fell in U.S.
Washington HP) The Na
tional Academy of Sciences call
ed upon Russian scientists Sat
urday to explain why they think
fragments of the Sputnik I rock
et fell on U.S. territory.
The Russians have demanded
return of the fragments, claim
ing that according to "available
data" some not entire-burnt
remnants of the rocket came
down along the west coast of
Alaska.
Dr. Detlev Bronk, president of
the U.S. academy, notified the
Russian Academy of Sciences
Friday that no trace of the frag
ments had been found.
Will Keep Looking
But he told Russian Academy
Fresident A. N. Nesneyanov that
this country would keep looking.
Bronk said it will help if the
Russians provided the "available
data."
Nikita S. Khrushchev, Russian
Communist Party boss, was the
first to claim that parts of the
rocket had fallen on U.S. terri
tory. He said this country refus
ed to give them back.
Government officials frdm the
White House down have denied
there is any evidence the rocket
fell in this country. American
scientists have said the last sight
ing of the rocket indicated it had
fallen in the Pacific or perhaps
on the Asian continent.

Damaged Destroyer
