English Scientists
Create Temperatures
Much Hotter Than Sun
Harwell, Engltnd HP) A
low, squat building in Britain's
atomic research center here
houses a huge gas - filled glass
"doughnut" called "Zeta" in
which scientists claim to have
created temperatures 1,000 times
hotter than the sun.
It was to Zeta it stands for
zeroe energy thermo-nuclear ap
paratus that Prime Minister
Harold Macmillan referred in his
Tuesday night brrtidcast when
he said British scientists were
on the threshold of "a new in
dustrial revolution." o
The doughnut flickers for an
infinitesimal part of a second
with an almost invisible flash
which scientists claim, they fuse
the nuclei of heavy hydrogen
(deuterium) atoms .the first
time the colossal power of the
H-bomb has been controlled.
Zeta lights the faces of watch
ing scientists who are now look
ing Qforward to the day when
they can proclaim that the H
bomb has been well and truly
tamed to produce a dirt-cheap
and unlimited power source for
peaceful uses.
Macmillan also told parlia
ment on Dec. 10 that just how
far the scientists have progressed
must remain secret.
Scientists make no secret of
the fact that Zeta has been suc
cessfully producing neutron par
ticles for four months.
Hot Temperatures
They admit the creation of
temperatures "in excess" of 5,
000,000 degrees centigrade
temperatures which they say are
almost 1,000 times hotter than
the surface of the sun where the
temperature is a mere 6,000 de
grees centigrade.
But they won't reveal just how
near they are to their ultimate
goal of 100,000,000 degrees cen
tigrade which would be as hot as
the sun's center.
The most comforting aspect of
the H-bomb taming tory, scien
tists said, is that the fuel supply
of deuterium comes from the sea.
Most of the hydrogen in sea
water is of the ordinary type
but one hydrogen atom in every
6,000 is deuterium.
This means that there is as
much energy in one gallon of
sea water, as in 100 gallons of
gasoline.
