President Sukarno called today
tor a "national struggle" in the
showdown with The Netherlands
over control of Dutch-held West
New Guinea. As he spoke there
were reports of new seizures of
Dutch property in the Celebes.
Sukarno spoke to a "Free West
Irian" rally in Surabaya, in East
Java. It was his first public ap
pearance since the abortive as
sassination attempt Nov. 30. Re
ports said heavy security pre
cautions were In force at Sura
baya. "We are not making compro
mises . . .."Sukarno told bis
cheering audience. He said Indo
nesians must be prepared to
make heavy sacrifices if they,
hope to wrest control of West
Iran (West New Guinea) from
the Dutch.
He warned the nation would
face shortages of food, clothing
and other vital goods.
Sukarno also was quoted as
O saying that "to3 many people
seek to concentrate their hopes
on the United Nations" to brinp
about a settlement of the con
troversy. "The struggle cannot be re
solved In Washington, Moscow
or Peiping but in Indonesia,"
Sukarno' said.
minded the profession and
some of those drugs eventually
blocked the general progress of
the people who used them gen
erously. Prof. Julius Pomeranze of
New York Medical College spe
cified that he referred to "alco
hol, tobacco, betel nut, cocoa
leaf, opium and heroin." His was
the newest voice raised in warn
ing against the over-prescribing
and over-use of happy pills.
"Tension and anxiety are not
only products of progress they
are also factors in its develop
ment," he said. "Anxiety creates
the drives that lead us to pro
gress. Tranquilizing drugs of the
past have moderated drives, al
tered physical structure and de
stroyed emotional patterns. In
this sense they have impeded
progress."
Anxiety Provides Drlva
He granted that it was "not
pleasant to live with constant
anxiety." But, he. continued, real
istic situations of living produce
anxiety quite realistically. And
it is the anxiety and the "drives"
anxiety mobilizes that permit the
mastering of the situations, he
said, adding: "to destroy these
anxieties may destroy our mech
anism for handling these situa
tions." His warning was circulated
among medical men through the
technical journal of the Ameri
can Geriatrics Society. It was
based upon the premise that "the
role of the physician cannot be
replaced with drugs. Drugs can
only be useful when the physic
ian has established the role of
friend, helper and true mediator,
and then prescribes with full
knowledge of the drug and the
patient."
This age of medical chemistry
has created "extremely valuable
drugs" but it also has encour
aged laxity in diagnosis. He
thought it would be "a great ad
vance for mankind if a drug
were able to overcome the neu
rotic drives which lead us to
unhappiness. Unfortunately the
facts, when carefully consider
ed, leave little hope that such a
drug has been found."
He said the tranquilizers chlor
promazine and rauwolfie serpen
tina had been proven to have real
effects in body chemistry and
were both useful in the treat
ment of some severe mental dis
orders. He questioned that real
effects in body chemistry had
been proven in the case of me
probromate which is marketed
under the trade names of "mil
town" and "equanil."
He said meprobromate had
been proven out only for persons
who are mildly neurotic and, at
the same time, have a good un
derstanding of their own emo
tionly processes which produce
their unhappiness, and an under
standing of what stresses upset
them.
"However, awareness of the
situation and good insight are
fundamental in the self-evaluation
of tension, and this evalua
tion often causes the tension and
its somatic (bodily) components
to disappear," he said.
"Drugs for which such claims
are made must therefore j be
measured with extreme care, for
results attributed to the drug
may be the result of the patient's
own emotional effort."

Biller Cold Wave
Hits North Plains
By UNITED PRESS
The bitterest cold wave of the
season, borne on near gale force
winds, knifed across the North
ern Plains and the Midwest to
day. Weathermen warned the
cold blast would push to the
Atlantic and Gulf Coasts by
nightfall.
Sub-zero readings were com
mon at the core of the frigid air
mass from the Eastern Dakotas
across Minnesota, Northern Wis
consin and the Northern Great
Lakes.
International Falls registered
an early morning low of 15 be
low zero, and near zero readings
occurred as far south as Des
Moineswa, and Chicago.
Temperatures in the teens ex
tended southward through Kan
sas, Missouri and Southern Illin
ois. Wind gusts up to 60 miles per
hour ushered in the cold wave
In Oklahoma, Iowa and North
Dakota, while gusts up to 40
m.p.h. were felt in Minnesota,
Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.
The high winds fanned a fire
out of control at Nicollet, Minn.,
Tuesday night, destroying three
buildings, and another fire de
stroyed the four-building busi
ness district of Wellsburg, N.D.
Clear skies ruled in the Far
West from the plains to the Pa
cific Coast, except for some fog
in western sections of Oregon,
Wshgton and portions of Cli-faefcia.
Macmillan Hints
New Power Source
London (IP) A "completely
Hew source of power" that can
taken from the sea was fore
seen Tuesday night in an ad
dress by Prime Minister Harold
Macmillan.
He said "controlled hydrogen
experiments" indicate "... a
completely new source of pow
er, the raw material of which
will not have to be purchased
at great expense from distant
countries, but could be got out
of the sea itself."
Macmillan predicted an indus
trial revolution that would create
"a world as different from what
we nave now as even me im
century was from the Middle
ages."
The prime minister did not
elaborate on the scientific study
on which he based his remarks
on a new power source. He said
"one of our experts" had told
him of experiments for "the
civilian use of the, H-bomb."
"To do great things Britain
must be sound and solvent," Mac
millan said. He called on em
ployers and employees to hold
firm prices and wages.
