Myers Family Celebrates
Fiftieth Year in Valley
Mr. and Mrs. O. V. Myers,
who arrived in Madford one
November to spend a couple of
days before continuing to Calif
ornia, recently celebrated the
50th anniversary of their arriv
al here. Mr. Meyers decided then
that Medford was a town with a
future, and gave up the idea of
going further south. He knows
now that he was right.
Mr. and Mrs. Myers and their
two daughters arrived in Med
ford November 24, 1907, by
Soutjacrn Pacific.
The family was "going south.
leaving Portland in search of
more healthful climate for Mrs
Myers. Attracted by the sun
shine, they decided to stay over
a few days. The following day
the family joined a Thanksgiv
ing day excursion crowd

day voted to give support to the
collection of Christmas gifts for
patients in the state mental hos
pitals and the Fairview home
A committee of the Mental
Health Association of Oregon
has agreed to sort and wrap
these gifts. It is asked that they
be sent unwrapped, but gift
wrappings, ribbon, etc., may be
Included. They may be sent to
the Portland Collection Depot

sic books, good records, package
mixes, new clothing, tailet arti
cles and cosmetics, scarves, hand

rettes, home permanent wave
kits, costume jewelry, games and
cards.

cited to help finance Christmas
parties in the wards, buy TV
sets, etc. Money gifts may be

ous community organizations.

railway was owned and operat
ed by W. S. Barnum, who was
engineer, brakeman, fireman
and conductor. Their destination
was the Glidden House;1- which
served a really sumptuous coun
try style turkey dinner.
Attracted by the beauty of the
Rogue River valley and the sun
shine, as well as the hustle and
bustle of the people, the Myers
family decided to stay over. The
real estate boom was on, and
in 1903 Mr. Myers formed the
real estate partnership of My
ers, Cusick and Sharp, with of
fices at the corner of Central and
Main street, now occupied by
the Rexall Drug store. That
firm took credit for selling some
of the highest-priced land in the
valley S2500 per acre was the
price paid by a Minneapolis at
torney, a Mr. Beckwith, for a
portion of the Norcross prop
erty across from the present Mon
Desire dining inn.
Mr. Myers owned and platted
several residential additions, the
largest being Highland Park and
Capital Hill additions. The three
"Janes brothers, Carlton, Milton,
and Harrison, were first to buy
and build their fine homes near
the reservoir.
A "bust" or recession in real
estate sent Mr. Myers upon an
equally venturesome project
the untried automobile business.
In 1916 he became the Grants
Pass dealer for the Bernard and
Keeney Dodge Agency of Med
ford. The Studebaker, Reo,
Chevrolet, Nash, and Cole Aero
Eight agencies followed, and he
pioneered the Mack Truck in
the valley. During the depres
sion years in the 1930s he turn
ed to the land again, this time
purchasing and operating an or
chard on North Pacific Highway
in the Berrydale district. Later
he returned to work for the
amnner huick agency and op
erated a used car lot at the cor
r.er of Bartlett and Ninth street
until he sold out and retired in
1952. The recollections of the
hazards, successes and failures of
fifty years of business life in
Medford are prized by Mr. My
ers, and he's still sure that this
is a town with a future.
Mrs. Myers (Birdeen) had
many happy years teaching
school at Howard and Phoenix
schools. Her former students of
ten call on her, now that she is
an invalid. The two daughters,
Marie and Dorothy, both gradu
ates of the local schools and
University of Oregon, are now
Mrs. Harlan P. Bosworth Jr., of
Medford, and Mrs. Y. S. Christ-
lanson, of Oakland. There are
five grandchildren and four
great grandchildren. Four of the
five Myers' grandchildren are
also graduates of the University
of Oregon, the fifth graduating
at Miami University, in Ohio.
The Myers family home is lo
cated at 20 Ashland avenue,
Medford.

looked like this. Mr. Myers, one of the val
ley's first real estate and automobile dealers,
believes that few persons will be able to
name the make of this car in which he and
his family were pictured in 1S08. The Myers
celebrated the 50th anniversary of arriving
here November 24, and shown with them
are their two daughters, Mrs. Y. S. Christian

Frank Buchter Rounding Out
Twelve Years In Footlighters
When Frank Buchter is seen
as Floyd Dennison in "The Wood
en Dish", three-act drama to be
presented by the Footlighters at
the Fairgrounds Theater begin
ning Tuesday evening, December
10, he will be rounding out 12
years of continuous participation
in the local theater group.
Mr. Buchter, who plays the
role of a self-centered "success
ful" son of an aged father (play
ed by Dr. Frank Roberts) about
to be sent to a questionable home
for the aged, has previously been
actor, director, make-up artist
and set builder for the Foot
lighters. He has also served the
group as president and board
member for several terms, as
well as being a charter member
when the theater was organized
in 1946.
Others in the production who
have seen long service in The
Footlighters are Miss Ruth Kil
bourn, who plays the role of
Mrs. Forsythe, owner of "the
home", Thayer Tarvin, who
plays the role of Sam Yeager,
lovable cronnie of "Pop Den
nison", central character of the
drama, Mrs. Helen Ashley who
is cast as Bessie Bockster, a
frustrated neighbor, and Char
lene Tarvin; who acts as book
holder for the cast.
Miss Kilbourn, who has play
ed many leading and character
roles for The Footlighters, as
well as serving as director'and
organization president, is a
graduate of the University of
Oregon where she not only took
part in campus productions but
won praise as a playwright.
The Thayer Tarvins, who have
played more roles than either
can remember, first met in Foot
lighter meetings and rehearsals,

klatsch Wednesday, December
11, in the sack lunch room of
the school, from 2:30 until 4 p.m.
The proceeds will go to the PTA
scholarship fund. Mrs. Austin
Caldwell, chairman of the ways
and means committee, is chairman.

Organized in Southern Oregon
Rogue Valley district of Ore
gon Music Teachers' association
was organized at a meeting Mon
day evening at the home of Mrs.
D. F. Huson, Medford.
Mrs. Edla Peterson, Ashland,
was elected president and pro
gram chairman of the group;
Miss Helene Robinson, chairman
of the music department at
Southern Oregon college, vice
president; and Mrs. Harold
Head, Medford, secretary-treasurer.
. Mrs. W. E". Hercher, Medford,
was appointed membership
chairman and Mrs. D. F. Huson,
Medford, publicity chairman.
The president of each district
in Oregon is automatically in
cluded on the state board of
OMTA and serves on the board
during his tenure in office.
Stanley Butler, president of
Oregon Music Teachers' associa
tion and faculty member at
Willamette university, was in
southern Oregon to help orga
nize the new group. Mr. Butler
reports that he found a great
deal of interest evidenced here,
both from former OMTA mem
bers and from new teachers who
have come to the valley recent
ly. He believes the association
with teachers on the local, state
and national levels will be re
warding and beneficial.
Members of the group will
have access to graded outlines of
theory, technique and repertoire
in the syllabus compiled by the
OMTA and approved by the Ore
gon Board of Higher Education,
it is stated.
The Rogne Valley district in
cludes all of Southern Oregon.
Specialist Gives Tips
On Care of Leather
Ames, Iowa (IP) Leather up
holstered furniture and leather
table top surfaces are easy to
care for, but not with furniture
polishes, oils or varnishes.
June Brown of the Iowa State
university's extension service
said that these preparations fre
quently contain solvents that
cause leather to become sticky.
She recommends using pure
mild soap or saddle soap to
clean leather pieces. Simply
dampen a cloth or sponge in
warm water, wring out and rub
over the bar of soap or saddle
soap. Rub dry with a clean soft
cloth.
If leather seems to be drying
out, rub it with a small amount
of leather dressing, using your
fingers and palm of your hand.
This advice also holds true for
leather shoes, handbags, lug
gage and book-bindings.

Any music teacher with proper
credentials is eligible for mem
bership, and is invited to contact
Mrs. Hercher. Meetings will be
held the first Monday of each
month and will be in the homes
of members. The group hopes to
sponsor various artists in recital
and also to hold workshops in
vocal and instrumental training
which will be of value to its
members.
State-wide examinations are
held in May of each year and all
duly qualified pupils are eligible
for this syllabus examination
and audition.
