recently my little children and I reluctantly took
our cat to the animal clinic. She was going toy
have kittens and was having a hard time.
After hearing the examining veterinarian, I regret-
fully told him to put her to sleep if she couldn't pull
through. We couldn't afford a costly operation.
Two tense days followed. When I called the vet, he
said, "She had one kitten yesterday but couldn't nurse
it. I couldn't stand it anymore. I thought about those
kids, so I rolled up my sleeves and operated on my
own. The cat's fine now, so are the kittens."
He'll never know how grateful my children were.
As for me, his gentle, generous act put a lovely new
color on the world. Mrs. Horace Daughenbaugh,

house guests so, along with other preparations, I
drilled my son on the importance of being especially
courteous.
The visit went wonderfully. Everyone outdid him
self in being hospitable and agreeable. I mentioned
it at dinner next day and said we should have com
pany more often.
"Yeah, why don't we?" my son asked. "Even you
and Dad had 'company manners.' Nobody was yelling
at me or telling me what to do."
It never occurred to me before, but I guess parents
need occasional reminding about their manners, too.

. . WHO ARE YOU?"
The pretty girl smiled as she saw the
startled eyes around the table.
"Don't think about an answer," she
went on. "Just tell me three things."
"Is it a gag?" asked the man across
he table. "Okny, I'm a rat, a bum, and
t&n aristocrat." o
All of us laughed. The pretty girl
smiled.
"I guess it's a kind of game," she said.
"But take it seriously."
"I'm Gqorge Holmes. I'm a husband.
I'm a doctor."
She smiled proudly at him. She was
his wife.
"That's pretty go. id," she said. "Actu
ally, you ought to begin with that ap
proach. You ought to take pride in your
name nd what you do."
She turned to me.
"I had been going yrtj pay, I'm a
Woman. I'm a writer," I said. "I hadn't
thought of using my name. And I don't
know why I put 'woman' ahead of
'writer'."
She approved.
"That's good. It's better to be a
O
woman first and something else ecofcd,"
A silence fell. The rolls cooled end;
the steam left the coffee. The pretty
girl waited. Then she sighed ft littja.
