Astronomy Is Studied
Without Telescope

of astronomy without a tele
scope may seem as importable
as a baseball game without an
umpire.
But such a scientific study is
being carried out here by the
director of the Dudley Observa
tory, Dr. Curtis I. Hemenway.
Instead of using the gigantic
tools of reflectors and glass,
Dr. Hemenway collects tiny bits
of matter from the air in an ef
fort to determine which come
from outer space.
The particles he studies are
about l10,000th of an .inch
long, weighing less than one-tril-lionth
of a pound.
Besides the particles he col
lects himself, Dr. Hemenway re
ceives contributions, by mail,
from points as far away as
Hawaii and the Arctic.
The particles are known tech
nically as micrometeroites. They
collide with the earth's atmos
phere at speeds ranging up to
100,000 miles an hour. Then
they slow down and drift to the
earth's surface.'
The reason for his studies. Dr.
Hemenway said, is that "If men
are going to travel in outer
space these things might be a
nuisance."

Storrs Agriculture Experiment
Station at the University said
previously scientists recom
mended nothing but white in
candescents with a preponder
ance of red and yellow wavelen
gths. But now studies show that
hens respond just as well to the
blue and green wavelengths by
fluorescent lamps.
The researcher said he tested
two strains. Strain "A" respond
ed equally well to all kinds of
artificial light, all hens laying
well. Strain "B" proved to be
