Satellite Batteries
To Be Powered By Sun
Baltimore, Md. OP) The
United States' baby satellite, to
be launched into space sometime
next month, will signal the
earth with batteries powered by
the sun through tiny portholes
dx the satellite shell, it was an
nounced Thursday.
The Glenn L. Martin com
pany made public a description
of the four-pound test satellite
which will be fired inside the
nose cone of a 72-foot Van
guard rocket. The two part cone
will open like a clam shell and
drop away before the 6.4-inch
diameter satellite is hurled into
its orbit. Flexible crossbars
which will support the satellite
will be ejected also after the
third stage of the rocket is
fired.

Judge Considers
Request of Elkins
Portland OP The request of
James B. Elkins for dismissal
of 10 bootlegging indictments
against him was before Circuit
Judge James W. Crawford to
day. Judge Crawford heard argu
ments Wednesday that Elkins
was forced, in violation of his
constitutional rights, to give
testimony before a grand jury
which tended to incriminate him.
Elkins' attorneys said this testi
mony led to the bootlegging in
dictments against him.
Judge Crawford-tsaid he would
examine excerpts of the testi
mony before ruling on Elkins'

MISSING HEART BEATS
Thousands of people worry
about missing heart beats, but
they shouldn't, because so rare
ly does this
happening
mean anything
serious in the
heart. Often
the little ex
tra beats seem
to be due to
the effects of
the nerves on
the heart. Usu
ally, the elec
trocardiogram shows no sign of
disease in the heart muscle.
Many years ago, Sir James Mac
kenzie, the world's greatest heart
specialist, collected statistics
which, showed that people with
missing beats do not come to any
bad end because of them. I often
say that my own father had them
from the time he was 45 until
he died of pneumonia at 84. I
have kept, back of my desk. Sir

Striking Operators
Vote on Proposal
Pittsburgh (IP) Striking
trolley and bus operators of the
Pittsburgh Railways company
voted today on the latest com
pany offer for settling the long
est mass transit strike in Pitts
burgh's history.
The 2,200 strikers cast their
secret ballots with the recom
mendation from their leaders
that the proposal be turned
down.
Gilbert Tietel, business agent
for Division 85, Amalgamated
Association of Street, Electric
Railways and Motor Coach Em
ployees, maintained the 26-cents
per hour increase over a three-
year period would give the strik
ers less than they had demand
ed for two years.
Tietel said he would be pre
pared to make a counter-proposal
to company negotiators if
the workers turn down the man
agement plan.
The Pittsburgh Railways offer
would boost the operators wages
to $2.40 per hour by Sept. 1,
1959. The present base pay of
the strikers is $2.14 per hour,
including a 4-cents cost of living
increase.
The loss of company revenue
so far in the 47-day strike has
been estimated in excess of $2,
500,000 and the wage loss has
been set at more than $1,250,000.
The strike has caused 300,000
daily commuters to find other
means of transportation to work,
school and shopping and has left
the greater Pittsburgh area of
1,500,000 persons with no trol
leys and only a sprinkling of
buses from independent com
panies.

Mankata, Minn. (IP) A junior-size
political wrangle was be
ing -waged today on the campus
of Mankato State college over
Abraham Lincoln's head.
Someone stole "Honest Abe's"
head from a statue of the Civil
War President on the campus a
month ago.
, The school's Young Republi
can league sent an open letter to
the school paper, laying the theft
at the feet of the Young Demo
crats. The Democrats submitted a let
ter of their own, denying they
had desecrated the memory of
the Republican president, and
said they were willing to back up
their defense with money.
A cash reward was offered by
the Democrats to anyone return
ing the head. If a Republican is
responsible, the Democrats said,
the money will go instead to set
the head back on the statue's
shoulders.
If the head never shows up, on
the other hand, the Young Demo
crats league offered to replace
the statue with a new one a
likeness of Franklin Delano
Roosevelt.
Air Force Transport
Crashes Near Ankara
Istanbul, Turkey (IP) A
U. S. Air Force C124 transport
plane crashed near Ankara
Thursday. Three of its eight crew
members were killed and three
were injured.
Two escaped unhurt.
The accident took place at
Cataltepe, not far from the
Turkish capital. The plane was
flying to Ankara from the U.S.
base at Tripoli, Libya.

get used to them." some persons

the medicine, experts tell me,
is more dangerous than the dis
ease. Cystic Mastitis
Hundreds of women want to
know what is mastitis and what
can be done for it. In the Greek,
mastitis means inflammation of
the breast. I doubt if anyone
knows exactly why some women
have enlarged milk glands in
their breasts: glands that often
hurt, especially around the time
of the period. Many thin women
have what we call shotty breasts,
with chains of little glands that
feel like buck-shot.
I have seen cases in which the
giving of some thyroid substance
helped. Sometimes the woman
has poor health generally; often
times she is too thin, and often is
oversensitive. Many of these wo
men worry about the pain, think
ing that this means that they are
going to get a cancer. Actually,
I doubt if pain in the breast
makes the woman more-than-normally
susceptible to cancer.
I am not sure than chronic mas
titis pre-disposes to cancer.

Reserve Bank to
Lower Discount Rale
San Francisco (IP) The
Federal Reserve Bank of San
Francisco will 'cut its discount
rate from 3 to 3 per cent today.
The discount rate is the inter
est charged by the Federal Re
serve on loans to member banks.
Any reduction in the rate makes
it easier, for the banks to bor
row money to lend to the public.
Similar reductions for reserve
banks in Chicago and Cleveland
were announced Wednesday. The
only one of the 12 regional re
serve banks holding to the 3$
per cent rate is Dallas. The
Board of Directors at Dallas
meets Friday.
