basketball expansion to the West
Coast still is two or three years
away. National Basketball asso
ciation President Maurice Podo-
' loff said today, but is as certain
as the move just made by big
league baseball.
The next additions in the NBA
will be Chicago, Baltimore anal
Pittsburgh as the league works
toward an eventual 15 to 18
teams in three separate divi
sions. Podoloff thinks it probable
that Chicago will be in next
season.
Talent is no problem but cities
which have large enough playing
arenas are the big stumbling
block.
"That's the major problem on
the West Coast," Podoloff ex
plains. "The Cow Palace in San
Francisco is adequate but we
have to wait for buildings in Los
Angeles and Portland. The diffi-
rCulty is that they aren't off the
ground yet."

ing. "We can start with two as a
minimum on the West Coast," he
says in his staccato voice. "But
actually they geed four or five
teams to compose their own divi
sion. Then we can have Eastern,
Midwestern and Western divi
sions. The grand scheme, when such
' a setup finally is evolved, would
accent local rivalries and cut
; down on intersectional travel.
; There would be a certain amount
: of intersectional play under the
three-division plan but the main
accent would be on intra-section-"
al rivalries. G
"This is a national sport just
as much as pro football and
; baseball," Podoloff explains.
; "There are 20 cities with a popu
' lation of more than 500,000 peo

most of them."

Ambassador Group
Washington (IP) The United
States is studying a proposal' to
create a standing group of al
lied ambassadors in Washington
to improve consulations among
North Atlantic Treaty allies, in
formed sources said today.
Some thought also is being
given to expanding- the group
later to include ambassadors of
nations in the Southeast Asia
Treaty Organization (SEATO),
Baghdad Pact and Organization
of American States (OSA). This
would serve to link the several
Free World alliances loosely so
each will know more about the
other's avtivities.
The ideas are among many be
ing considered by the administra
tion for the scheduled North
Atlantic Treaty Organization
(NATO) meeting in Paris Dec.
16-18.
President Eisenhower's illness
for a time cast a cloud over the
meeting which was planned as a
chief-of-state gathering to seek
ways to strengthen allied scien
tific and military cooperating.
The White House and state de
partment at first said the Presi
dent's illness apparently ruled
out his attendance. But the
White House Thursday left the
door open in view of the Chief
Executive's apparent swift re
covery. Presidential Press Secretary
James Hagerty said the Presi
dent's doctors "will decide later"
whether he can make the trip.
He said if Eisenhower does not
go Vice President Richard M.
Nixon will go in his place.
The NATO allies agreed un
animously Thursday to go head
with the meeting in either case.
