Music Festivals Are
Considered American

school music festivals nowadays
are considered as American as
"Yankee Doodle" and are as
sumed to be almost as old, ac
cording to officials at Emporia
State College.
They said the festivals began
with the former head of the col
lege's music department, the late
Frank A. Beach, who got the
ieda from Eisteddfod, a compet
itive festival of the early Welsh
settlers in Emporia.
Beach also devised the rating
system still used in music festi
vals, and he developed a travel
ing music appreciation course
and "long distance telephone
concerts" during the early part
of his 27-year career at Emporia
State from 1908 until his
death in 1935.
Catch of Two Tuna
Give New Knowledge
San Diego, Calif (IP) The
catch of two nlbacore (tuna) by
a commercial fisherman here has
revealed new knowledge about
the ocean movements of the
sleek and highly mobile speed
sters. The two fish were among
batches tagged by the California
Department of Fish and Game.
One of the fish had been tag
ged in July, 1955 and had been
at "liberty" for 710 days. De
partment spokesman said this
fish could have made two round
trips to Midway Island or one
long round-trip to Japan during
the time between being tagged
and being caught. It also had
gained 13Vi pounds while free,
weighing 25V4 when caught.
The other albacore, at liberty
306 days, was one of a group
tagged off Monterey, Calif.
