THE SURFACE
Nassau, The Bahamas Aqua
lungs and I don't get along at
all well, at least on first ac
quaintance. But then according
to Bruce Parker, who took me
acqualunging yesterday, Aqua
lungs are not mastered the first
time by anybody. The general
practice here is to spend an after
noon in a swimming pool getting
used to breathing all over again.
It's a bit of an effort both in
haling and exhaling and there's
different rhythm, and all that
takes some adjusting to.
Still, I thought I'd better try
since we are getting rapidly to
be a nation of fish. To me, it's
a remarkable development of our
time after spending some mil
lions of years climbing out of
the sea and getting adjusted to
living on land so many humans
are terribly intent on getting
back into the ocean and all but
living there.
All this is a postwar devlop
ment of great significance and
vast spread made possible by
the aqualung and nowhere is it
practiced more assiduously than
right here. Parker has trained
vast numbers in how to use the
Aqualung, an experience which
makes him view the tourist with
some scepticism.
"They come down here with
the funiest ideas," he says. "One
guy came down here with a
carload of equipment. He'd
bought out Abercrombie and
Fitch, the whole store including
all the books. It was the books
that did the damage. He read
all the books and found out how
the smell of blood drove bar
racudas mad, and if there was
so much as a drop of blood in
the water the barracudas would
come around and bite their fing
ers -off. So I speared a fish and
spread blood all over the ocean
and then tried to hand the
wounded fish to a visiting bar
racuda. The barracuda backed
away as they usually do here,
but then perhaps barracudas act
differently in other places."
I mentioned that I'd been
raised in Florida where barra
cuda had a formidable reputa
tion. "Well, I've heard that too, but
then you mustn't expect fish to
act the same everywhere any
more than you expect humans
to. Sometimes I fly people out
to the other islands. On some
of the reefs where the fish have
never seen people you go down
among 'em and they just lie on
their side and look up at you.
They have no fear at all and
you can swim right up and rub
noses with them. Then you take
a fish that lies around some of
the keys around Nassau, the ones
that have had tourists and people
about for hundreds of years. You
take a spear and you can't get
near those fish. They've been
speared and harpooned and sein
ed for hundreds or years and
they pass the information along
to the children: stay away from
people. I know fish are supposed
to have no brains but there is
a difference in behavior between
the ones who live close by and
those in the outer islands where
they never see humans."
The water here is as adver
tised, luminous with color, varia
tions of green and blue in aston
ishing profusion, and when the
sun shines superbly illuminated
and colorful. When you inves
tigate the nether world of fish
as I did, you find the flashing
green and blue and turquoise and

Economy Jeopardized

ard Neuberger (D-Ore.) said
Wednesday the economy of the
Pacific Northwest has been
jeopardized by a stalemate be
tween the United States and
Canada over joint development
of the hydro-electric potential of
the Columbia river.
Neuberger, writing in the De
cember issue of Harper's maga
zine, said the impasse has re
sulted in per capita incomes in
the area falling off by compari
son with the national average.
"In a region without local
stores of oil, coal, or natural
gas," Neuberger said, "it has
been little short of calamitous to
have its one inexhaustible sup
ply of industrial fuel falling
water no longer tethered to
grant pentocks and turbines."
The Oregon Democrat said the
stalemate has prompted Canada
to make plans for developing
the upper Columbia exclusively
for its own use.
The average amount of electri
city in a flash of lightning is
about 30 coulombs or somewhat
less than the amount that can be
charged into an average storage
battery.

While I watched, a group of
pirate fish a fish that looks as
if it had been painted by Duty
swam bv with brisk determina
tion as if they were late to a
Parent Teacher meeting and
were determined to raise hell
about the new school board. Five
seconds later a swarm of grunts,
a vellow fisli of great charm and
staggering numbers headed due
East as if they were old grads
going to the Yale-Harvard game.
Then a solitary grouper flashed
by for a luncheon date with a
blonde he knew. They all seemed
to be going somewhere and they
knew the quickest route where
the traffic is lightest. Then a
few seconds later the mood in
this watery world changed ut
terly. There were a thousand or
so fish just sitting around look
ing at each other, nobody going
anywhere. It was Sunday after
noon in the park.
"It's like being a bird," said
Bruce Parker. "When you know
the aqualung well, you can go
up or down by taking a breath
You can do somersaults. You
move slow and lazy as if you've
had three martinis and you feel
utterly at peace. But there's no
television down there, so I don't
think you could live there."
Well there's no television
down there yet, but the way
things are moving underwater
I wouldn't be at all surprised to
find it there in a couple of years,
the fish all looking at Ed Sul
livan and wondering if maybe
life on land is not the thing for
them and shedding their gills
and acquiring lungs and going
through the whole process of
evolution all over .. again, just
after they thought they had all
that behind them.
