Carpet Specialist Gives Buying Tips

says the way your rug wears de
pends mainly on the density of
the pile, the backing and the
rug pad.
"The most important point to
check when buying a carpet is
the density, or compactness, of
pile not the height," explained
Jane Werden, University of Il
linois textiles and clothing spec
ialist. "You can check by measuring
a square inch of carpet, then
count the number of length
wise and crosswise rows in the
marked area and multiply
them."
The answer, Miss Werden said,
'gives the number of pile tufts
per square inch." And the more
tufts, the better the rug.
But there is an exception: the
diameter of the yarn also is im
portant. In most cases, the great
er the twist of the yarn, the bet
ter the covering will wear.
"Also turn the rug over and
make sure the backing is closely
woven," Miss Werden added.
"Then buy a rug pad, or under
lay, to serve as a cushion and
greatly lengthen the carpet's
life."
"Vacuum rugs and carpets
once or twice a week and send
them to a commercial cleaner
about once a year," Miss Wer
den recommends.

If there appears to be a bit of discrepancy over the date of
the first Thanksgiving in today's Mail Tribune, ifs because we
couldn't decide which source was correct, and just used them
both.
When writing the front page copy, Potpourri consulted the
encyclopedia which gave December 13, 1621, as the date of
Governor Bradford's proclamation for the first Thanksgiving.
Then PH, whose memory we seldom argue with, said the copies
of the proclamation give it as 1623, and produced one from a
magazine.
Ye editor of ye Potpourri column decided ye readers might
like to peruse it.
"To all ye Pilgrims:
"Inasmuch as the great Father has given us this year an
abundant harvest of Indian corn, wheat, peas, beans, squashes,
and garden vegetables, and has made the forests to abound with
game and the sea with fish and clams, and inasmuch as he has
protected us from the ravages of the savages, has spared us from
pestilence and disease, has granted us freedom to worship God
according to the dictates of our own conscience; now I, your
magistrate, do proclaim that all ye Pilgrims, with your wives and
ye little ones, do gather at ye meeting house, on ye hill, between
the hours of 9 and 12 in the day time, on Thursday, November
ye 29th, of the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and
twenty-three, and the third year since ye Pilgrims landed on ye
Pilgrim Rock, there to listen to ye pastor and render thanks
giving to ye Almighty God for all his blessings. William Bradford,
Ye Governor of Ye Colony."
After reading the governor's proclamation. Photographer Bob
Vroman suggested that we make the headline of today's front
page read "Ye Pilgrims."
The Army couple wrote from Berlin to say that they were
to leave about November 19 to spend a leave at the Army's rest
center at Berchtesgaden. Since their second wedding anniversary
is November 25, the holiday will include this celebration as well
as Thanksgiving. "We also plan to stop in Munich, Stuttgart and
Heildelberg, providing our money holds out," they wrote.
The Army wife has been considerably upset over the fact that
the soldier's schedule can never be predicted and add "Inci
dentally, we had to turn back , tickets for the "Rite of Spring"
ballet because the CO decided, that day, the men had to work
that night."
"I have crawled into bed with a hot water bottle to write
to you," the letter began. "It is never warm in our room, and a
good part of the time it is cold. We have central heating, but our
one radiator is never srj warm that we can't lay a hand on it.
"You asked how it is working out to be sharing1 the kitchen
and bathroom. It isn't really too bad, because we cook only for
ourselves, whereas last winter we were cooking for Harry and
Vickie, too.
"I will draw you a diagram of the apartment, and one of our
room. There is one other couple, besides the landlord and his
wife, in the apartment. They are young and have no children.
The man is working on the manuscript of his doctoral thesis in
music, preparing it for publication. His wife is a secretary for
an organization that handles German church music probably
a publishing-house.
"The landlord and his wife are older, probably in their
forties. Frau Bergener speaks English quite well, but her husband
knows only a few words.
"We haven't had an opportunity to call on Mrs. Diepenbrock's
sister because Kenny has had so little time off. Since I have been
here (10 weeks) the band has had only five free days, including
week ends. Twice in the last month they have gone out into the
zone on week ends to play for football games. This means a
12-hour train ride each way, at night, besides the day for the
game. During that time they are restricted to the car in the train
or to the service club at the post where the game is. Thus the wives
are most effectively discouraged from going along because the
only time they can actually be with their husbands is during the
game, or about three hours out of 36- So, the band wives stay
home.
"I have been here approximately 10 weeks. During that time
there have been 20 week end days and one holiday. The band
had one day free in September (they worked Labor day), one in
October and three days in November. In addition to working the
usual hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or later, plus Saturday mornings,
they usually have one or two night jobs a week."
In one letter the soldier enclosed a hand-drawn map of Berlin
showing the four sectors, and indicating how the city is entirely
surrounded by the Russian zone. He marked such points as the
Olympic stadium, the Garden of Remembrance (Russian War
Memorial and the only place in the Western Sector where Russian
soldiers are on guard) and the Brandenburg gate, "the famous
gate ofvhich you always see pictures." He also indicated the
Tempelhof Air base, commenting that the terminal building is
said to be the largest such terminal in the world and, as a building,
second only to the Pentagon in Washington.
He wrote "I have been in all four sectors of the city (twice,
on band trips, we managed to get lost in the East sector) and it
is amazing what a difference there is between them. The Ameri
can sector is built up so that there are few places that you find
really extensive ruins. In the British sector they have concentrated
on the business district and in the French you find a little
rebuilding and a fairly run-down condition. The Russians are
known around here for having done nothing and permitting
nothing to be done. The philosophy of the Reds is to keep them
well under thumb and keep the economy unstable." O.S.

Gives Directions
For Candied Peel
Corvallis Fruit cake lovers
who want to save money on
their holiday baking can plan
to make some of the fruit cake
"makins"' at home this year,
with directions furnished by an
Oregon State college home econ
omist. It's possible to make candied
orange, grapefruit and lemon
peel confections at home and
save almost three-fourths of
what is spent in stores, says
Mrs. Ruth Klippstein, extension
nutritionist. For instance, if
fruit peels are salvaged from
breakfast orange shells,' or cit
rus salads, the only cost is a
little sugar and fuel.
Here are directions for mak
ing orange peel at home. Candi
ed lemon and grapefruit, may
be prepared in the same way.
Candied Orange Peel
Cut peel from eight oranges
into strips. Heat peel in cold
water to the boiling point, drain
off water, and start with coid
water again, and heat to boil
ing. Do this with three water
changes. This removes bitterness
from the rind.
Drain.' Cover with cold water
and allow to cool. If , desired, re
move soft white part of the rind.
The white part is not bitter, but
it doesn't look as attractive
when peel is used in cake.
Cut the peel into narrow
strips, one-eighth to one-fourth
inches wide. Boil one cup sugar
and one-half cup water, until
syrup spins a thread. Add peel.
Cook gently until syrup is evap
orated and peel looks clear.
Drain on wire cake rack. Coat
with fine granulated or powder
er sugar, and leave in open air
until thoroughly dry. Store and
use as required in cakes, pud
ding or as a confection.
