Sugar Beet Acreage
To Be Cut in Malheur
Ontario (IP) Sugar beet
acreage In Malheur county next
year will be cut slightly from
this year.
Alan Jacobs, manager of the
Ontario office of the U.S. Agri
culture Conservation and Stabi
lization Committee, said a re
duction of 2.7 per cent in acre
age was agreed upon by the
Malheur County Sugar Beet Ad
visory committee. He said the
1957 total acreage in the coun
ty was 17,378 and next year
will be 16,911.

Ingram, bearded for 22 years,
let his hair go untrimmed for
14 weeks while working in a
TV series.
His wife, not knowing that his
next role was an unbearded
dining car waiter, suggested he
get his hair trimmed. "She was
horrified when I came home,"
he said. "She'd just asked me to
get my hair trimmed, and I
came home without a beard for
the first time in 22 years. I
guess she though I went all out."

seeing a flying saucer Thursday
night, its lights "flashing on and
off."
Blankenship said the object,
about 100 feet wide and tapered
at the bottom, hovered over the
highway moving up and down.
He said, "it definitely was an

my wife and me half to death."

NERVOUS EXHAUSTION
Hundreds of women write, ask
ing what is the cause of their
great nervous exhaustion, and I
cannot say be
cause there
are several
causes for ex
haustion. If a
woman has a
good nervous
1 n h e r itance,
with no cases
of nervous or
mental illness

her family, and if she has al
ways been a bit frail, then when
perhaps now in her thirties, she
has had great overwork
and strain, with perhaps a sick
child or sick mother or husband,
or some tragedy, a bad accident,
a long-lasting influenza, or a
weakening operation, her ex
haustion is likely to be due to
her strain. In this case, a good
vacation, a rest, or for a while
the help of a maid in the house
can straighten her out.
I am more worried about the
woman who has a poor nervous
heredity, with perhaps one or
more moody, silent and melan
choliac people in the family. If
such a person who has had an
easy enough life, rather sudden
ly, without any obvious reason,
gets to feeling exhausted, blue,
discouraged, weak and toxic, and
if careful examination fails to
show anything physically wrong
to account for the illness, I will
suspect that what she has is a
mild spell of depression. In such
case, a vacation plus a lot of rest
plus much psychotherapy is not
likely to do much, if any, good.
Then, a few electroshock treat
ments will often bring the wom
an quickly out of her depression.
Spurs on the Heels

I imagine it is part of a gen
eralized tendency to arthritis,
plus perhaps some aging. If the
thing is painful enough I imagine
an orthopedist can chisel the
thing off.

Salem Driver Fined for
Traveling Too Slow
Salem (IP) Harold V. Gass
ner, 26, was fined $20 here
Wednesday on a charge of driv
ing too slow.
When state police arrested
Gassner on Nov. 2 he was driv
ing about 25 mph on Highway
99 and there were about 50 cars
piled up behind him. Officers
said there was nothing the mat
ter with his 1955 model automobile.
