A FINE SHOW
I don't want to make a big
thing of it but General Motors,
which just celebrated its 15th
anniversary on television, show
ed infinitely more intelligence
than Standard Oil of New Jer
sey, which not long ago cele
brated its 75th, by hiring first
a couple of good writers.
Whenever anything as large as
Standard Oil or GM gets set to
celebrate an anniversary, money
they got. And if you got money
you can get fistsful of stars.
But I pass this information
along, free to any other large
corporation which plans a big
anniversary most successful
of the big commemorative
shows all have writters some
where lurking in the underbrush.
The Bing Crosby and Frank Si
natra show had, of course, those
two large personalities conspicu
ously on the premises but there
was also, of course, Bill Morrow
who wrote the show.
The General Motors show was
written by Helen Deutsch, a
vastly intelligent screen writer
and produced by Jess Oppen
heimer who developed and pro
duced and was head writer for
"I Love Lucy."
Miss Deutsch, who got belted
rather mercilessly for her first
TV chore, the script of "Jack
and the Beanstalk" last year,
is being quite properly hailed for
this one. Her theme, something
which in itself is a rarity on TV,
was taken from Thornton Wild
er's "Our Town" "Do any
human beings ever realize life
while they live it, every, every
minute?" It is a marvelous
thought by one of the finest of
American writers and a perfect
ly wonderful and unusual and
moving idea around which to
center a two-hour TV show.
Once having got the writer
and the theme, GM then hired
the stars with lavish hand
June Allyson, Claudette Colbert,
Dan Dailey, Steve Lawrence,
Eddie Bracken, Kent Smith,
Cyril Richard, Don Ameche, Peg
Lynch, Dinah Shore, Doretta
Morrow, Helen Hayes, Howard
Keel and others and they all
seemed to have some reason for
being there rather than as is
usually the case in these big
extravaganzas standing around
chewing up money.
Having delivered hereself of
so fine a script Miss Deutsch pro
ceded to moan that in television
the writer has no status at all.
"As a rule, the writer's efforts
are filtered through the minds
of the producer, director, not to
mention assorted executives,
with the result that the writer
has no esthetic control, no stand
ing at all. Frankly, I think there
are too many executives" in
volved in one show. I think the
average count is eight execu
tives to one creator.
Well, it's been Miss Deutsch's
fortune I or misfortune to
be involved only in vast enter
prises like the General Motors
show where eight executives is
not really too many. In more
mundane TV operations, Miss
Deutsch, the number of execu
tives per ; writer diminishes to
sensible proportions. Also the
number of writers underfoot at
some of the shows and the re
spect paid to them is fairly sur
prising. The Perry Como show, for in
stance, a program which fre
quently uses no more than five

the board of directors of RCA
to renew him.
Besides, I know of no other
medium except television not
the stage, not the movies, not
anything that have anything
as unusual as the General Mo
tors show.
